Rella, tell Jessie not to be discouraged.

If she enjoys her routine as it is now, I think she should stick with it. Beginners don't really need to be doing splits anyway (I do HST myself, which is a whole-body routine 3 x week). She should watch her diet (she needs to eat a lot of protein, some carbs & some healthy fats). Since she's nearing 30, she shouldn't avoid cardio, but she can do things that don't stress her out too much...some walking or biking would probably be good...it wouldn't hurt for you two to do it together, either (always good for a marriage). Most importantly, make it fun, so it can be sustainable. And she shouldn't expect radical changes in her physique right away. Lasting change takes time.

(I've been married for 10+, btw, so I know all about it.)

And she should sign up here. She'll get lots of info and encouragement.

Jessie/Rella -

Not sure I'm reading the routine right - are you doing seven exercises back to back, and only then resting for a couple minutes? So it's a circuit training kind of thing? You might want to try taking a rest in between exercises so you can lift heavier, lifting heavy usually gets better results and at least for me I find it way more fun.

I made up another routine, using mostly the same exercises, to keep things simple. Wait 1-2 minutes between sets.

lunges x2
sumo squats x2
dead lifts x2
toe raises x2
bench press or dumbbell chest press x2
lat pulldown or some kind of rowing exercise x2
upright rows x2
military press x2
biceps curl x2
triceps kickback - or you could try the rope pressdown instead - x2

Let us know how it goes!

Rella, please encourage your lady to join and post directly. I appreciate your concern but this would be a lot easier if she could ask questions and be answered directly.
