Seated v. Standing military press

I switched over to seated military press last workout and I had to use slightly less weight.

Is the seated military press a little more difficult because it involves more isolations since you can not use any part of your body to give you momentum? Whereas in the standing military press you can cheat a little.

Usually seated you are stronger than standing strict pressing because people tend to arch or not situp straight when seated pressing so this puts more of the stress on upper chest and front delts.

Maybe you were weaker because it felt awkward being your first time, or maybe you tend to use knee/leg drive when standing and so in that case seated pressing may be more restrictive than standing. Depends how strict your standard style of standing press is.

You can cheat with anything (doesn't mean you should)

For my money I do almost everything standing or on a ball, but I don't train heavy....

I'll take standing presses over seated any day. I like to do seated db presses now and then, but standing barbell or db presses are where it's at. Also happens to work your abs and back abit too.

I'm stronger standing with the BB. I can't use the same technique seated and the lift feels very awkward.

Seated DB presses are great though. No problems with them. I really like single arm standing DB presses too. Training these heavy kill my abs.

Typically you do more weight seated. (I use 35lb db's seated but drop to 30lb db's when I stand). Standing will pull other "core" muscles into play.....abs, lower back, even legs. Seated seems to isolate my shoulders more but I do have to make sure I'm keeping my back flat.

I think it's actually the opposite. I always find it harder standing while sitting. Like some mentioned, you can still cheat sitting by arching. Definitely think the weight decrease is only because you just started doing them and they're new to you...
