Sarge's Lifting Chronicles 2006-2007

Re: Sarge hits the 5x5 for Ginormous Soleus Muscles!! - Log

- As always, I really appreciate you guys that have helped me so much along the way... Not gettin' too sappy on you, but I know it's good to hear and you should be aware of how much of a huge positive impact you've had on my lifting since August/September
:rose:

Heh, you anticipated my advice pretty well with the "your flat is progressing" comment. I haven't really paid much attention to your DB numbers (hence not noticing the size .0001 font request for advice) or regarded them as a good barometer of progress since they're always your third and fourth presses of the day. Since you're already doing barbell OHP and bench variations, just look at the DB lifts as a way to get some extra volume. As for the difference between your current and previous numbers, it shouldn't be surprising that you're less proficient at a movement you didn't do for a long period of time (i.e. your 5x5 run and whatever you were doing between last summer and beginning the 5x5).

As for the calculators, who cares? You put up 225, and I really doubt the variations in plates from gym to gym, if any, are significant enough to put that in doubt. Plus, 185x6 is on your light day (in other words, a couple days after your "heavy day"). So just stick to 3-8 reps for general training and don't worry about what some spreadsheet says or a discrepancy between your 1RM and your "light day" 6RM.

Re: Sarge hits the 5x5 for Ginormous Soleus Muscles!! - Log

Congrats on the PR.....don't worry about max calculators, they're a good guage, but not 100% accurate. Some people are much better at limit lifts in the 1-3 range that their 10RM indicates, some people are much better with higher reps, but can't use much more intensity to fire off something in the 1-3 range. Most people are somewhere in the middle, and that is who the calculators favor, some lean to one side or the other while in the middle, and that is where most discrepancies occur.

In any event, a 275 bench is in the very near future for you.

For emphasis :)

And note I felt the same irritation briefly in my right bicep last night... came and went fast though. My left feels fine again, stretched it out real good during and after pressing while in the gym.

K I'm going to just assume here for a moment... I'm assuming that maybe either A) You are more dominant on the right side and the left side is trying hard to keep up, or B) you are stronger on the left trying to push, pull, etc more then the right causing overuse. I would say B because you then move on to say that the next time around your right one started acting up which may mean that you were babying your left a bit after it felt injured and then the right had to pick up some slack. Sorry haven't read up on the new exercises you are doing but maybe need to incorporate some single arm stuff to even the arms out, or insetad of BB use DB, if you haven't already.

The place you describe.. There is a groove in the humerus called the bicipital groove. Three muscles connect there Pec Major, Latissimus Dorsi, and biceps short head. So... Dropping lats off.. we are left with two. Pecs and bicep.
Pushing movement + strengthening pecs + shortening of the pecs + pulling on attachments = Pain

I'm not thinking this is an actual bicep issue, but a pec issue.. I'm just going off a hunch, not a doctor, not seeing it.

Chest stretches = decrease in pain

There's a link with some stretches for you if you don't know or haven't already included those....

CS: well put... thank you for the reassurance and big picture view man.

BiggT: Thanks bro... I've been waiting for that damn PR for a long time, lol. Ahhh, I like your explanation of the rep range... makes sense, I've always been able to muster up serious intensity for a couple reps... but too many and my body gives out, lol.

Treilin: It's actually B. I'm very right side dominate. Visible in pics to me, but to the "average joe" no one has ever pointed at me and said "omg your right side is soo big" lol. Good call! I really need to be doing more upper body stretching... ever since I've focused on doing every leg and lower body stretch i've slacked up top... GREAT LINK :) I'll let you know how that helps over the next few weeks.

:lmao: I look in the mirror at my right side and think... What the... I'm very right dominant as well. Talk to the left side.. "You see... don't you feel little?!?"
Actually the more I work-out the more I notice little things I do that really affect everything. Like putting weights on the bar. Every time I bend over to get the 45's to put on the bar I bend with the right side, Mid exercises when my arms start given out I think help rightie 'cuz leftie ain't doing it!
Just sunday I noticed on SBT on the lying french press when she goes to press back up she cranks her right hip ab section to press up. I asked her to watch me to see if I did it, and sure enough. One thing that helped was taking the feet of the bench and placing them on the floor (had them on bench to protect my jacked back). She also turns her head to the right when she's trying to get a hard rep. Paying close attention to what you are doing and having someone look for little things like that will help you adjust for it.

Re: Sarge hits the 5x5 for Ginormous Soleus Muscles!! - Log

Treil, I know for a fact I used to do that far too often.

I only catch myself twisting over to my left side (to push more with the right) when I have to. AKA, no spotter and i'll die if I drop it, lol.

Loading and deloading plates, I might as well tie my left arm behind my back, LOL... I try to make sure I use my left hand when I realize my left is being used.

____

*Logging*

My squat session is overdue, keep pushing it off for various reasons that are plenty valid. But tomorrow it's time to get a move on... pending leg amputation I'll be in the squat rack. Trash can handy and all.

Rotators were feeling abused today. Strict military blamed. I'll revert to push presses next time. Delts will get their due time at some point... bench, bench, bench... focus, focus, focus.

Re: Sarge hits the 5x5 for Ginormous Soleus Muscles!! - Log

Yeah yeah yeah... I am in the same club with ya'll like T mentioned above :lmao:
Farrrrrrr more right side dominant

I always used to do that too. Loading 50Lb plates with one hand through a deads & squats workout. Strained my forearm.
Whenever I get a strain, I can usually think back to how I did it.

Ridiculous finger and thumb pumps right now.... forearms only a lil' bit.

Well I throw the old magazines out anyway... why not make them more compact for the trash?

Weird? Maybe. Fun? Hell yah!

I can rip a phonebook. The small one's though, haven't tried a big one in a while, couldn't do it last time.

It looks like you already realize this, but ease back into the squats. Your strength will return soon enough as you get used to the movement again.

Yes.. Ease being the most operative and muy importante word.

Back = Pain... wow. I'll be hurtin' for a few days. Friggin' squats and trying to do too much. Damnit! :(

On a more positive note:

My grip strength has noticeably improved. Grabbing the larger DB's (for me that would be > 90's) isn't as much of a struggle and I barely use straps anymore. Used them yesterday out of laziness for the 115's shrugs though.

CS has had to remind me of big jumps recently as well. My back squat is stalled and I think the culprit is only using the 45's and 25's.

Just keep at it bro - you know the drill. I get to start flat benching today I think and I bet my top set is w/ 135.... I will cry for sure.

Still watching posture through the day? Working on your planks?!? Transversus Abdominis is the only ab muscle that connects to the spine that will strengthen and support the anterior part of the spine. You hit it with planks.
Good job on progression

Sarge,

those comments you made a few days ago about the 5x5 advancing your lifts without your core keeping pace really resonate with me. I am definitely following along because I think I'm in the same boat and I need to start incorporating more core work outside of weighted situps/declines and hypers myself.

Keep up the progress your squat is gonna be your strength before you know it because of the care and attention you are showing it now.

Merry Christmas amigo.

Re: Sarge hits the 5x5 for Ginormous Soleus Muscles!! - Log

Treil: I rolled the crap out of my upper right back region for a few seconds... hard... hurt like hell, but felt awesome after. Did the trick, it doesn't feel all tight and knotted today. I love my roller!
lol, thanks. It feels good to feel good an not like a fat fuck... gawdang, where's my cranberry juice!? ;)

CK: Thank you... I hope you and yours have a great holiday too!

Kabeetz: I didn't do ANY bodyweight decline ab crunches when i was getting strong at my squat... up to ~240lbs i think at my most ATF. That was the problem, my posterior chain was getting so friggin strong and tight and simply pulling my spine up and back cuz my ab muscles and whatnot were weak. So if you're doing decline crunches a few times a week that should be good, add weight to them when you can.

Thank you bro. Merry Christmas to you too :coffee:

Good b/c you do not have to go all the way down to benefit from the movement ... allows for injury & cheating if you are not conditioned to do so.

Merry Christmas back atcha!

I agree with sarge - don't worry about trying to isolate your core (whatever the crap that means) with additional exercises. Just make sure you're progressing on the decline sit-ups and whatever other ab work you're doing and you should be fine. You're using your core a lot on all of the lifts as it is, so core-specific exercises are superfluous unless you're trying to correct an imbalance (which, since you've been keeping up with the sit-ups, probably isn't an issue).

Re: Sarge hits the 5x5 for Ginormous Soleus Muscles!! - Log

Congats on the two-plate...bodyweight? You and BiggT might have to exchange wardrobes when he's down to 225 and you're on your way to 250.

Settling on one OHP variation seems like a good way to go.

Re: Sarge hits the 5x5 for Ginormous Soleus Muscles!! - Log

Thanks CS!

Yeah... that's one thing I'm not looking forward to  but I'm going to do my best to make it as much lean gains as possible and probably be up around then (240 at least) by next summer or sooner.

BiggT what size shirts you wear that fit loose/comfortable at ~250? 3X? When your not going out to the Roxbury and trying to impress the ladiezzzz with the disco polyester :)

I already have a few 2X shirts... I'd be swimming in a 3x if I tried one on I'm sure at this point.

Pants... fuggetabout it, I don't even want to think about that, LOL. I'll need a tailor on call.

36" Waist... I was hesitant is typing this. I wear 34 pants fine, 32's don't fit cuz of my glutes and thighs but I can button them without doing "the jig" and laying down. I'll ignore this number, lol.
LOL NICE A guy that jigs in his pants... I think you are the first man to admit this!! Good job :

Re: Sarge hits the 5x5 for Ginormous Soleus Muscles!! - Log

Congrats on your PR's Sarge and hope you enjoyed your holidays!!!

Re: Sarge hits the 5x5 for Ginormous Soleus Muscles!! - Log

"the jig" HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAA!!

i got a few pair of diesel jeans for xmass...end up doing the jig and then the waist was too big. sarge, start shopping at rocawear....their smallest size is xl i think lol

Re: Sarge hits the 5x5 for Ginormous Soleus Muscles!! - Log

Instead of worrying about finding pants that fit, you could just claim a bogus Scottish ancestry and start wearing kilts.

Re: Sarge hits the 5x5 for Ginormous Soleus Muscles!! - Log

lol, thanks ladies, and JP yah, hopefully it won't matter by summertime, i'll just be semi-nude and topless every where with board shorts

CS:

Hahahaha, do they make them with Navy pleats as to blend in a bit more at work?

Seriously though, they make dress pants with elastic sides on them now I think my father mentioned something about them... I will have to look into that stylish haberdashery.

Re: Sarge hits the 5x5 for Ginormous Soleus Muscles!! - Log

George Foreman has a line of dress pants out with elastic bands.....they can be found at Big and Tall stores across the country.....NO, I don't wear them and no I've never had to shop at the Big and Tall store, lol.....Just thought I'd pass along the info.

Re: Sarge hits the 5x5 for Ginormous Soleus Muscles!! - Log

There will be none of that, lol.

No big and tall stores, thanks for the info though :)

Hey bro, check out my previous question.... I know we have similar "frames" so I was wondering what size t-shirts fit loose/comfortably on you around 250lbs?

Re: Sarge hits the 5x5 for Ginormous Soleus Muscles!! - Log

when im 210-215 (heaviest i have been) anything under 2x looks pretty stupid. id venture to say @250 you would fill out a 3x.

I bet your genetically gifted arms do look pretty ridonculous in anything but a 2X. My arms are snug in XL's... i'm not sure what yours measure at but they bust out of XL's i'm sure, lol.

I've been at 220-225 for a few months, XL's is what I usually put on and fit comfortably without being overly baggy for my taste. I have a couple 2X's but they're reserved for sleep wear.

Re: Sarge hits the 5x5 for Ginormous Soleus Muscles!! - Log

Sarge, for me it depends on the brand. Most cotton T's I need a 2 XL at 250+ and they fit 'normal' and some even are a little fitting around the shoulder girdle after a couple washes. Most of my golf shirts are a 2 XL.....in dress shirts I wear a 2 XL or a 19 neck/36 length in the sleeve.

If it is a very expensive expensive shirt, I can wear an XL, but for the most part they are too tight for my liking. Old XL's will do at the gym or something. I'm just not into douche baggery like walking around with clothes that are too tight.....I've considered it, but then thought "Nah, if I saw me out, I'd make fun of me" lol.

Suits, I get a 52 or 54 (if the arms are tight) jacket and then it is all just custom alterations from there on.

I've tried on 3 XL t shirts, but honestly even though "3 X" sounds cool, at 6' tall I look like a tool in them, lol, as they're just too long for my tastes.....If I were a little thuggish they'd be cool though.....A 3 x is for a thug, lol.....a guy over 300lbs......or a guy over about 6'6" with some meat on his bones.

When I am 220-225 I look best is an XL straight across the board.

Re: Sarge hits the 5x5 for Ginormous Soleus Muscles!! - Log

Word.

That's what i wanted to know, lol...thanks man.

LOL @ the douche baggery. I've reprimanded myself for trying to squeeze into an old "T" size medium before

So probably just be a few more 2XL's purchases in my future... sounds good to me.

Re: Sarge hits the 5x5 for Ginormous Soleus Muscles!! - Log

some of the guys below 200 like myself 'cough cough' need dbag clothes when they hit up the roxbury or some hot place like that lol. i prefer the term fitted...not tight. i think if you can find somewhere in the middle that's a good look.

good goal bro if 2xl is fittin you niely aroud the arms, delts, back etc.....however, don't get picked up at the mall cause security thought you were concealing a bowling bowl udner your tee.....anywho, nice lifts....

BTW - you weight is holding cause, like you said, you aren't eating enough or often enough.....makes the body thinks its starving so it holds onto everything and converts it to fat....u know this.

Re: Sarge hits the 5x5 for Ginormous Soleus Muscles!! - Log

Sarge, we've all tried D-Baggery, lol.....Over the Summer I was buying some shirts, and for shits and giggles I squeezed 255 or so pounds into a size "L" Polo golf shirt......I looked in the mirror and while there was no doubt about my gigantic traps and bulging biceps, the term ASSHOLE (written in capital letters just like that) came to mind, lol.....Basically, to keep myself in check I ask the question "If I saw myself out dressed like this, would I make fun of myself"....if the answer is Yes, it goes back on the rack.

haha...(B) makes me think of somebody, lol....there used to be a local guy around here back in the 90s, AAS dealer and general pillar of the community, lol, and he'd go out and about in some sexy and skimpy get-ups.....and despite the fact that he was over 280lbs with abs, I still thought he was a flaming homo, and I was just a teenager, so if I wasn't impressed he must have been a giant douche bag filled with several smaller douche bags, lol

Sorry for the thread jackage, Sarge, lol

This is friggin' hilarious, it's koo.

Yeah I don't care if I'm ever 300lbs with abs... doesn't give me or anyone else the right to wear a Fushia mesh belly shirt.

:lmao:

In all honesty, I despise the "B" mentality and people that think they can do whatever the fuck they want cuz they're big, I hope never get "big."

One of my friends said that to me one time, and I literally said what I just typed there "I hope you never get big then."

No licenses for douche baggery.

I was with family shopping before Christmas and was walking toward someone coming in the opposite direction, so being the nice guy that I am I side stepped a bit to make room to pass... ended up clearing off a shelf of toys off from in the center of the isle... opps  I blamed my jacket.

my family was laughing their asses off at my "huge shoulders"... I wasn't nice enough to pick it all up though. I was on a time table, sorry store Manager.

...........although 300 w/ abs would be pretty cool - and the amount of gear needed to maintain should discount any wardrobe mistakes..... well, minus anything mesh.

Planks

30 "mississippi" second holds, slow... twitching, tourturous

Did them: last night and tonight

Been stretching well... and rollering out my body nicely, I love rollers. Painfully soothing.

Week 7 Day 5

12.28.2006
Thursday

forgot my training journal  .. was kinda nice, and a perfect day to forget it being my semi "lazy" day ... i call it.

ATF Front Squats: Barx15, 65x?, 75x?, 95x?, 115x8, 135x8
my back was very aggitated all through these, i took my time... loooong breaks, lots of streching, every set felt stronger and better, just needed to take my time.

Farmer's walks: 85's, 95's, 105's, 115's .... i need to start doing 110's for a few sets for more workload cuz my gym tops out at the 115's.

DB shrugs: i think i just grabbed the 90's for 12 reps and headed over to the rack...

BB Shrugs: 135x?, 225x?, 315x?, 405x5

didn't strap up for 315... that's a first i think... over/under grip held up... my grip is MUCH improved from way before.

Pretty quick and painful session, lol.

OH, I did abs too...

Decline Crunches: BWx10, BWx8

Top Bottom
