Week 5 Day 2
12.6.2006
Hump Day

3:45pm to 4:35pm

Chins: BWx3, BWx2.5 ... official, I suck at these. It's ok though, It's all about the push for a bigger bench at this point.
Decline Abs: BWx12, BWx10
T-bar Row: 90x5, 115x5, 135x5, 155x5
Hypers: BW x millions, BW+45x10

^^^ all of that was kinda supersetted, funkily (yes, funk-ily). Ex... abs... chins... t-bar... abs, ect.

Hammer Low Row: 90x8, 190x8, 290x8
BTN Lat Pull Down: 110x8, 130x8, 160x8
DB Hammer Curlz: 35's for 8, 40's for 8*, 45's for 3, 50's for 8
*much easier than I remember last time, so bumped weight this session.

Bodyweight this morning, right out of bed, nekkid, post liquids expelled:
217.5 lbs

Getting tighter

Re: Sarge hits the 5x5 for Ginormous Soleus Muscles!! - Log

Do you say this to yourself while doing them too? hee hee

“DO IT AGAIN, SOLDIER... NOW!”—and upon completing the second cycle, you guessed it—“ONE MORE TIME!” After finishing the third cycle—“AT EASE!” Relax, go home, slam a performance-nutrition shake, and enjoy the burning sensation you should be feeling in your abs.

Thanks

For Reference: Taken on 12.1.2006 @ 222.0 lbs

And the infamous shitty cell phone pics, half nudes in the bedroom:

FrontBicep.jpg

Backtop.jpg

BackShots.jpg

Hovering around 220 and not much above in the 225 range any more...

Recomping re-focused, must... loose.... some... waistline.... junk. I've never had a naturally flat stomach region, and I think the fat cells from when I was a fat kid are still there... lingering... just to fuck with me forever, lol.

Feelin' good though.

Can't wait to squat this week  start using my damn legs again on some real lifts! YAY!

HiDn: Thanks borham, appreciated in every way :qt:

CK: hehe, thanks. Those were taken pre-x.rays and pre-"I need to do core work now" posts.... you're sweet

*B.Bunnylicious*: :D Thank you

Treilin: :D Thanks!! Hmmm... no, nothing concrete...though it's never concrete with me and will change around unless I tack it on to my already outlined workouts. SO... for now, i've been doing weighted crunches and some hypers in the gym with my lifting... at home after major stretching session I do some planks, supermans, and leg raises.

Most importantly, what's helped the most I think is keeping my lower abs tight throughout the day, while sitting, walking, everything. It's quite a choir to consciously think to do it all the time... but I haven't had any lower back pain like before... in a few days since i started. Yay :)

It'll get easier with time, I'm sure.

I've done weighted abs 2 days in a row this week...abs don't feel abused, feel tight and strong. I don't want to "over" do it... how many weighted ab sessions should I do a week you think? Or just go with my body... a few here and there before each 4 days a week lifting session (to stay tight for the workout, ect)?

Re: Sarge hits the 5x5 for Ginormous Soleus Muscles!! - Log

I'd like to get calipered soon actually... I'm curious how much LBM I have on me right now compared to previous caliper test (late summer, I think it might have been). If I remember correctly I had 170 something LBM then... I'd have to check the sheet in my training journal later.

^^^ Buns, you will be very happy to see this :rose:

Well I think you nailed it with keeping them tight through the day and doing corrective posture techniques!
That's crucial to everyone!
I would go with your body on what to do. IF you can handle it then do more. If it becomes tender to much do less.
Especially with sitting all day... Maybe even put a balance ball as a chair at your desk... It forces you to keep good posture.. I am slouched over like a dufus right now as I type this...

Yeah I don't do well with weights first thing, unless I have eaten a meal prior. Thne I'm o.k. I like afternoons better because your body peaks with flexibility in the afternon. Lord knows I'm stiff in the a.m.
SHUSH!!!

Re: Sarge hits the 5x5 for Ginormous Soleus Muscles!! - Log

I LOVE lifting in the afternoon's... if I was independently wealthy (like i will be some day lol) ... I would lift afternoonish regularly.... early night works for me too.

40grams ISO and juice was not enough to power my workout...at all.

I even tipped my head back and poured some honey down with my PureCEE for good measure before driving to the gym... I think i'm becoming depleted from my previous VERY "full" state too

Stiffy's in the morning? lol...oh. nevermind :p Yeah I hear that.

finally updating it:

2nd day CGBP: Barx10, 120x8, 145x8, 165x3*, 185x5**, 170x4***
*was supposed to do 1 just for transition
**felt like 300lbs, not that i'd know what that was like, just sayin'
***backoff set was pathetic, weight wasn't low enough, I was pissed.

BTN PP: Barx8, 115x5, 135x5, 155x5, 165x3*
*3 or 4... either way... horrible showing

decline abs bwx10... and a few after sets of decline bench after dropping them.

DB Decline: 65's for 10, 70's for 10, 75's for 8*
*The only good thing about this other gym is their d-bells are normal. Handles are not convex cylinder shaped... like bowd out in the middle as my usual gyms are.

DB Military: 45's for 5, 50's for 5, 55's for 4 ... ridiculous, I was toast.

To make me feel like I didn't have on pink panties this morning:
DB Shrugs: 75's for 10, 105's for 15, 120's for 10
my usual gym doesn't have >115 lb DB's...that's another good thing about that place... but damn yoga mom's are in the way, and everywhere... not exactly eye candy there either.

Cardio: 9 minutes on the treadmill up to 4.2 speed... 4.0 speed on their machine is maintainable unlike my "usual" gym @ 4.0 i'm dyin' lol

I have typed out a sequence that i like to follow before somewhere... I think on al420's log though.

yeah, cs... they are bad news for me. I'm sure they'd be fine after my body got used to it after a week or two. That's not happening though. Cardio am only from now on if I decide to go in.

Week 5 Day 5
12.9.2006 ... RIP Pop
Saturday

Step-ups: +50x10, +70x10
Abs: BWx10, BWx8
OLY Squats: Barx20, 95x20, 135x12*, 185x5**
*That was almost black out mode... exhausted.... too much for the 1st time in 3 months I guess.
**After a long break... and that felt like 315lbs lol... felt good to be doing them though.

Power Cleans: 135x6, x3, x4 ... for fun cuz my lower back had zero issues with squats, I've missed these
Farmer's Walks: 85's for 30 steps, 95's for 30, 115's for 28*
*they're on the end of the rack and didn't feel like walking past it, just to come back and get the steps in
DB Shrugs: 90's for 10. seated: 90'sx10,95'sx10, 100'sx15 with 2 second contraction hold... felt nice. Then 80's standing for 12.

A few DB curls.. 35's and 40's
Rev. Peck Deck (rear delts): 3 sets

I didn't log start time.
End time: 4:30pm

Appreciate it guys. thanks. If you pray, keep my family in your prayers and thoughts...

It's my grandfather. This is going to completely change our family... he's like the Godfather for us, this old little Italian man that was the glue for all the cousins, and family down there.

I'm "ok" for now... it won't hit me til' I get down there. I still can't really believe it.

Holy sore thighs. Quads, hams, glutes too. I'll have to get in a real light squat session the next lifting day (in 2 days... but I have a feeling this is going to be all out of whack, depending on when I have to go out of state).

Lower back hurts I think i've been slacking on keeping abs tight throughout the day.

Welcome back to the world of squatting. The lower back soreness could also be another consequence of squats putting more demands on you that you're not used to, given that this layout was specifically designed to avoid taxing your back until you figured out what was wrong.

If you still have that weight set at home, you could just clean 95 or 115 up, press it, then put it on your back and do a few sets of 8-10. That would be one option for active recovery if you're not able to get to the gym for a "real" light squat session.

Re: Sarge hits the 5x5 for Ginormous Soleus Muscles!! - Log

sarge....great to see you're are attempting a strong comback.....my legs are shot too, but I feel as long as we continue to squat with good form, it'll building muscle! WHo the fuck cares if people laugh...........

On a side note, but really do farmers walk do? Traps? Are they solid for mass?

Re: Sarge hits the 5x5 for Ginormous Soleus Muscles!! - Log

Hey Sarge. Go have a look at ricanx99 thread. I tried to start a club and he got mad at me. I even had us set up for custom shirts and head bands! I don't think he understands. A club is a good thing...lol

Re: Sarge hits the 5x5 for Ginormous Soleus Muscles!! - Log

*B_Bunny*: Dang... well do what you gotta do :) I really don't think it's from the squatting. My neck and upper spine need an adjustment but lower felt fine yesterday... i know i was slacking with the core tightness yesterday for sure.

CS: Appreciated bro, thanks. Ahh, good idea. well I can't press it fully out... standing, ceiling is too low for my OH reach.. but I can definetly get it on my back i'm sure. I may do a few light rep sets today to get some blood in the legs. Great call.

JK: Thanks. Not attempting... It's just time to start squatting again. Farmer's walks are great GPP, grip strength, full body work. You're walking around holding a few hundred pounds it's bound to make you stronger, lol. You know that the lift doesn't add mass, eating and calories do bro.

FF: lol... i'll have to check that out. Me and AL started a Big Bench club cuz our pressing sucks... mine more so than his, therefore that makes me the President, not just a member ;)

I def agree that you need to train in accordance with your eating to gain lean body mass. I have a feeling Sarge agrees with that. Maybe worded he should have worded that a little different?

Sgt?

JKurz1 said:

Do you agree that:

Calories In > Calories Out = Mass Gain

It's a true statment. The quality of that mass will vary person to person. The stimulous that provides quality mass (muscle) gain is lifting. The more motor units involved (like squatting) provide a great stimulous for muscle gain.

Did you understand how I explained Farmer's in my own words? I'll find a website that goes over it more in detail if you like.

Let's not delrail this thread, we can take it to a pm if you like....but the truth of the matter is we don't NEED nearly as many calories as many take in to grow nicely.....a good friend who competes nationally and internationally at 5'10, 205 consumes about 2700 calories off season..........just a thought.

It's my thread... i'll keep posting as I like :p

I hear ya bro.

Ok...back to the "everyone is different" topic....

Your good friend is NOT you. Does not have the same chemical balances, hormone levels, ect as you... i'm not sure there are many people with EXACTLY the same levels of "stuff" in them.

Some people grow on 2500 calories...some DO NOT grow on even 6,000 calories.

Feel me?

it's all about experiementation and finding out what's best for you. If you're not growing and the scale isn't going up. You need to eat more, plain and simple. It's not that complicated.

("You" in this post doesn't = Jkurz... it's just for making the point in my post. If you can apply it to you and gain from it, great :) ... if not, hopefully it's helped some other people reading along)

That may be possible for HIM, but with my metabolism, I can barely gain weight eating ~4000-5000 a day. If I skimp and only eat 3 meals a day, the scale starts moving back down.

All I am saying is that's it's very very very uncommon and most take in 10x more cals then they need....plain and simple. 15 cals per lb is PLENTY......Unless, of course, fat gain is of no concern.......No more posts please.....unless initiated by Sarge....I hate when people hyjack (im just as guilty) so let's keep it to pm or start a new thread.....

wtf... my title went MIA  ..fix that in a minute.

I got 2 workouts in...

1 of which I figured would be a "maintenace" lifting session for CGBP, the 2nd was back (no t-bar there) so I G.P'd it up..

ended up "feeling" the CGBP and it went beautifully, so I kept the planned big single in sight... 190x2... then hit 225x1, with 1 or 2 in the tank for sure.

:supercool PR ... broke that mental barrier finally, threw the 2 plates/side on there and pushed the shit out of it. Previous was 215x1 i think. 205 3x3 multi-rep/set is my previous "max"... On the road to 315.

I left at around 216lbs... i'm at 221.0lbs right this minute. Watery as hell, and need good food badly (no more fast food, disgusting).... and hydration. On the road I'm a camel so I don't have to make a million pit stops.

Congrats!

I like how you think about your PRs.

I know you probably just got back and have a lot on your mind, but have you given any thought to moving things around a bit now that you're cleared to squat again? (e.g., working in a second day of squats)

Thank you!

I figure it's the best way to think about it for what I want to accomplish and as it's more of a hobby than pushing to get a certain poundage by "xx-xx-xxxx" date and time, ect. Just a long road, hard work, and good eating while adding a few pounds to the bar every week.

Yes, I have thought about that. And actually threw in some "recovery squats" on my W6D1... which you'll see shortly. Next week and more long term/big picture they'd probably be better suited to be on my Day 2 before back work... what do you think?

here's my report... :)

Week6 Day1

hump day in jerz

ATF Squat: Barx10, 95x10

CGBP: Barx10, 115x5, 145x5, 170x5, 190x2, 225x1*, 170x8, 170x6
*Huge PR for me... the brick wall has been taken down

Dips: BWx5, BW+15x5, +20x5

abs: Bwx10, +20x5
GM's: 45x8, 65x10

French Press: 45x8, 60x8, 65x8
... had to use preweighted. and 65x8 was just as hard as 80x8 last time, musta been from the benching... or the bar/different weight set up.

Speed Power Cleans: 155x5, 155x5
Snatch Pulls: 155x8, 185x5

... exhausted, toast, done.

11:00am end of workout.... musta been all the fresh bakery goods fueling me, lol.

Week6 Day2
12.14.2006

Thurs, in jerz.
2:45pm

Hammer Low Row: 90x8, 190x8, 300x8
G.P. Row: 95x6, 135x5, 155x5, 185x5, 205x3*
*holy hardness... I should ease back into these. I think my PR for these is 215x3 or 5... I was surprized my back held out to bang out a triple with 205.
BTN Lat Pull Down: 115x8, 145x8, 160x8
S.A. DB Row: 50x8, 75x5, 85x5, 100x6, 100x5
DB Hammer Curls: 35's for 8, 40's for 8, 45's for 10

Decline abs: BW+10 for 8, x3
hypers: BWx10

Looking back on this... that's a good amount of work.

I felt nice and strong. Could be due to increased sleep and naps. High calories...even if they weren't the healthiest choices, I think I got necessary protein in.

Sounds like a good place for them. You could go a bit lighter or lower-volume then since you're also doing back stuff and make your former "leg day" your heavier/higher-volume squat day.

Don't be suprised your back accpeted the 205x3 - you conditioned it to brotha.

Nice bench PR. 315 in 2007?
CK: Thanks!

AL: > 6 weeks off from unsupported rowing, I was surprized, and I see 225+ rowing in my near future. Eh, that'd be huge progress. At my pace probably 2009. 275 might be more realistic for '07.

For emphasis :)

And note I felt the same irritation briefly in my right bicep last night... came and went fast though. My left feels fine again, stretched it out real good during and after pressing while in the gym.

I've been hammering presses for a long time now.

I'm thinking deload due to the previous DB numbers I could hit. But then I think I just got another PR on flat benching.

Need advising. Even if it's: "Shut the fuck up, your flat is progressing, quit your bitching"

lol.

Another "thing": my 1 rep recent PR of 225 lbs felt as though I had another rep or two without a doubt.

but:
185x6 = 215x1 max (per Starr spreadsheet)

Possible that some people's body's are better naturally at lower reps? If so, should I just stick with just singles and triples?

Or, the gym where I hit 225 lbs, the weights are under weighed... that's what i'm kinda worried about.

- As always, I really appreciate you guys that have helped me so much along the way... Not gettin' too sappy on you, but I know it's good to hear and you should be aware of how much of a huge positive impact you've had on my lifting since August/September
