Regaining my muscle back

Roxbury

New member
Ok, so Im 16 and I used to workout a lot, had a good diet and have been lifting for 3 years now. In march I stopped working out all together because I had a back problem that wasn't diagnosed at the time. So, I kinda went in a state of depression because of it and my diet went downhill and I hardly ate and didn't do any physical activity for about 2 and a half months now. I was about 177-178 and now I'm about 162-163. All of the weight I lost is muscle and now I got diagnosed with 2 bulging discs, but my doctor said I could lift again.

So, I am wondering, will my muscle come back any faster since I used to workout a lot? I have heard of muscle memory, is this true?, or will I have to start from square 1 again like when I started lifting?

No bud your body will pick up quite fast to wear you left off. Muscle memory is a real thing. Just train hard and push your self in the gym and a couple weeks you will start to see your body take shape again. Gl

there is a reason us older guys preach to the young guys to build a base when they are young.

yes muscle memory will stay with you so focus on training hard when you are young and train smart so you do not hurt yourself.

quick story to prove muscle memory and body memory. used to train with an ironman. he has been training since he was 8. well one day playing football he cracks his leg wide open and has to have surgery.. gets put in a cast and is out for 3 months. the guy was a 17 minute 5K runner btw. well i remember the first couple weeks he came back he was running 27-28 minute 5K's which is incredible for someone who is coming from a broken leg and hadn't run in 3 months. but the more incredible thing is just 2 months later he was back running 5K's under 18 minutes.

so yes muscle memory is very real. the more you build it up young the easier it will be to come back from layoffs.

Thanks a lot, I really appreciate that. I am just freaking out because I used to be pretty big for my age and now in just 2 and a half months I lost 20 pounds of muscle , which took me a while to build up and now I'm super skinny, but have a lot of flab and excess skin. Again thanks and I hope it works as well for me as it did for that guy.

When you lift, what you are really building is a neural pathway. The big, protein matrix part of the muscle can come and go quickly, but the nerve part always remains. Expect the muscle to return quickly, assuming you were lifting natural before...

Alright thanks a lot guys. So, will I start to feel it come back soon?, because this is just my second week back training and I don't really see or feel any difference, especially in my arms, there skinny as hell and have sooo much extra skin.
