Question about the bench press?

Often when i bench press after my second or third set I can only lift the bar halfway. Its not that my arms fatique and the weight drops but once I reach half way I can't finish the extension. I'm trying to get my triceps stronger thinking that might be the problem? Any advice?

do you mean that go get it half way to lock out, then fail ??? If so it is probably your triceps that are weak. how wide is your grip, how high are your reps and how many sets do you want to do. If you can't complete your ideal amount of sets, drop the weight

I used to have the same problem. It was really affecting we rep drops. Like, i would be able to get X for 15 reps, then (X+10) for 12 and then (X+20) for 5 reps. Its like going up the 20 lbs and i would drop 10 reps. It was soo frustrating.

To fix it, i moved triceps to a different day and really made them a priority. Thankfull, this had made my triceps go way up in strength and now, when i had 10 lbs. to a bar, i rarely drop more than 2 or 3 reps per set.

I agree with rjl296, try emphasizing your tris for a while and it will help.

i do flat bench 3 sets of 8 but by the third set my arms cant raise more than halfway. its not really failure cuz my arms wont go lower than halfway, theres just no way i can get it up all the way to lock out.

i currently do chest and bis on monday weday and friday and tris and shoulders on tuesday and thursday. im thinkin ill move them all on to one day and just work out monday wednesday and friday. im thinkin i dont give myself enough rest, but ill def work on the triceps.

training chest three times a week AND triceps 3 times a week ?? wont work First all - triceps are hit VERY hard IF you bench right. If you are a bodybuilder,( or rec weightlifter ) train each once a week, the way you train right now - you are almost definately overtraining:)

train your chest once but hit some sets of pushups throughout the week to build up your overall strength and endurance. working with your own bodyweight is a great tool while it is still challenging. when you are ripping off pushups like its cool, then you lose that commodity <sigh> but chances are you wont have the problem you describe...anymore.

I would think about doing lots of Incline Tate Presses (elbows out extensions).
