My pref is whole food, chicken breast and some veg (broc, green beans, etc), or a slow protein, but whole food is best. Slow digestion and release of amino acids into circulation, and increased thermic effect of food digestion.
Protein powder doesn't make you fat per se, but can influence insulin which inhibits lipolysis, even small amounts. Lastly, total calories are more important overall of fat gain esp in the presence of elevated insulin.

I know whole food is better, always better, but how about Whey taken in conjunction with something before bed. I never have Whey alone - usually mixed with a little fat source or a blend protein.
