overly agressive in gym

thecompound

Pro Bodybuilder
I have started my own gym in my garage with a okie deadlift bar, and a TPB. It was warranted to the overly aggressive nature i get and feel as if public gyms and average people just dont understand. I am most like Pete Rubish, and realize that in-order to keep pushing my self and big numbers among powerlifting competition, I need to be as explosive and angry as possible. I channel everything though that 90 minutes and go about the rest of my day fine. Can anybody relate or feel this way in here? Just a rant I know

When I lift I don't want to talk about your routine, or your day, or wait for you to do your bs quarter squats while you take 10 minutes to check your FB photos to see if you were tagged from the night at Chad's pool party . That time is my time in my colosseum, I need a lifting partner that just shuts up, motivates me, and has the same mentality. END RANT

I am going to be recommencing lifting seriously in about a month, and I completely understand where you are coming from. 99% of the gyms are not PROPER gyms, but health clubs designed to suck people in quick, and generate as much income up front as possible to deal with the high turnover rate.

I recently walked into a 24 hour fitness, and this big kid had me sign release forms as per usual and escorted me around the free weight area. We began talking and it became painfully obvious that whatever he had done to get to the way he looked, was as much or more due to genetics, than actual practical and effective training knowledge. Eventually he escorts me back to their sell area, wherein he tries to sell me, doing his best to convince me to plop $200 bucks down, for the cheapest monthly membership rate. When I asked what their turnover rate was, he got really pissy and the pleasantries abruptly ended. I grinned and walked out.

Anyhow, digression aside, most gyms are either hangouts for hookups, places for people that know little about training to maintain basic health, or places full of guys whose heads are filled with so much muscle mag garbage that you'd be hard pressed to glean much useful information out of them, other than the latest way to take a selfie while chugging the newest, super optimized, NOS-blended mega protein.

So ya, I feel ya. I just plug the headphones in, and do my thing. I am not averse to talking to people in the gym, if they are friendly, have an actual desire to train productively, and don't intrude during actual sets, but sadly, these types of people are a small percentage of most club memberships.

Nowadays I don't listen to much rap anymore, or even heavy metal, but when I train, I definitely put my game face on and prefer music that helps, or at least doesn't inhibit aggression. I consider the barbells my dangerous friends, friends that can help, but only if shown the proper respect, while simultaneously being willing occasionally tell them what's what when necessary.

Dude people look at me like a freak in my gym. You know that feeling when you have 500lbs on your back did a rep and half knowing you might fail on your second? I grunt like Leonidas on crack and my face looks like a chipmunk crossbred with a tomato. Its the only attitude that produce winners, the weight has to instil fear in you and you have to overcome that fear by attacking it with unrelenting rage. Every set, every rep is a struggle. Love the coliseum analogy.

I envy you bro, I wish I had the space for my own gym.

Relax guys most people just aren't going all out and never will. There are gyms out there for that. I went to a gym in Buffalo NY years ago and no one even acknowledged my existence for 6 months or so. It was an old warehouse with grey paint on the inside, fancy machines?? No unless they served a good purpose. Heavy metal music was always on, don't like angry music?? Don't go there. It wasn't hair band music it was more like Ride The Lighting album playing in the back ground.

Same with martial arts, there were many guys in that gym who were very serious about fighting and cross training. I ended up with a black belt while I was going to that gym and the attitude was "so what, you got your black belt. Want to train for real??" Time to cross train MMA style and this was before the MMA existed.

My whole point is there are gyms out there that are for the hardcore. As far as hopping up and down scream etc. That will be only tolerated so long, in the Buffalo gym they would be likely to say shut up you fat weak pig. Problem there is the guy who just said that has buddies and is probably world class violent. The guy I got my black from worked out at that gym and he was a 2nd degree black belt with a Olympic bronze melt, coming in at 6' 1" 230 lbs. Good luck giving him a beat down. The other side of all this was once they thought you were serious, just ask a question and they would help you. I learned a huge amount at that gym on all levels of training, weight lifting, endurance training, various martial arts. Most of those guys were well rounded with the idea that I will be able to defeat whoever shows up....Some stuck to just pure body building or power lifting or whatever they wanted but they went all out. Problem of a home gym is you will never pick up things from other guys, believe it or not someone out there may have something useful for you to use.

BTW 500 on your back???? Nancy, that's not a lot in my world.
