I am struggling to think of another back exercise for my routine, I've got pull-ups, bent over rows, deads, so I need one more what do you think? Also , i can only do about 10 pull-up first set then anywhere from 5-7 for my next two sets, would it be more beneficial to do pulldowns where i could guarentee a higher number of reps?

My upper back could use so work.. thanks

Deadlifts, rows and chins are all you need for good back. Work on increasing your poundage, and you'll grow.

why are you concerned with doing a hugh number of reps?

I have the same concern as he does. I have joint problems, and doing pull-ups plays hell on them. I went from sets of 6,6 to 8,3 over a two month period. Not much improvement.

It depends way too much on how my elbows are feeling that day. But I think the lat-pulldown machine looks stupid, so I stick with pull-ups.

:)

forget the reps! Add weight!

I was doing bodyweight chins, and I was never able to do anymore than 8 reps no matter what I did. I would 8 on the 1st and 2nd set and then 4 on the 3rd.

But as soon as I added weight and drop the reps down to 6 I could 3 sets of 6 with 10lbs attached no sweat, and my lats blew up.

three or four

weighted front chins
barbell rows, or tbar rows- I switch them around
deadlifts- I like them, but due to a lower back injury incurred a few years ago, am wary of them.
close grip pulldowns

I don't think increasing volume is the thing to do...stick with two, three at most, back exercises and go for heavy weight.
