Need advice on squats!

I've got a lot of trouble going below parallel with a wide stance when i sit back (my shins stay perfectly vertical). The problem is that i have long legs and a short torso, so i have to lean forward absurdly far... going just to parallel isnt too bad but its still pretty difficult because of the forward lean. Should i slowly work my way down from a couple inches above untill i get to parallel? I'm also limited by my power rack because it is only 44" wide (area between support beems on floor)... I feel i should be going about 4" wider than this but the only way i can think of is one foot in the rack and one out (straddling one side) which seems dangerous really, or putting some kind of blocks under the power rack so i can put my feet under the sides, but this also seems kind of dangerous. i could also move my stance out the rack, but thats REALLY wide (54").

My stats:
5'11
158 lb
I'm parrallel on a 15.5" box.
Currently squatting on 18.5" box

any advice would be much appreciated.

Slowly work down for now. That is about the best you can do given your situation. You can try a few light sets with the really wide (54" stance) on DE day.

Do you have any flexibility issues?

actually i dont think i even need to worry about these for a while. the doctor (third place i've gone and 7th doctor i've seen to be technical) i'm being treated by for my upper back problems (along with a myriad of problems lol) doesn't want me squatting like this. though he's not a powerlifter he does seem like an expert in his field and sure seems he'll be able to fix my back and whatnot - the evaluation session was 2 hours and even took into account every previous sports injury i've have, weight and height gains, all foods i eat, school, various imbalances in my body, etc. probably 4 times as thorough as other people that are even ex-pro athletes and treat pros... anyway he said the way it would put stress on my hips could be bad for me at this point in body development. anybody have anythoughts on this? any exercises that match the wide stance squat for posterior chain and to move big weight in the squat that arent as wide? should i still be able to do widestance squats, any info on their safeness?

thanks for any help

arioch - the flexibility in my hams could be improved but i think its generally pretty good (i can nearly put my palms flat on the floor with straight legs at any point of the day)
