Knee Scopes...Who Has Had One?

Moe

New member
A while back, while performing high-rep (light) leg presses, I injured my knee. MRI was negative.

Since my orthapedist has been pushing (gently) for a knee scope. However, the rehap program I devised has been working wonders, and the pain has diminished to the point where I can do free-standing swquats without pain. I have been doing a lot of light leg-extensions nad super light squats and leg-presses. AS well, I have recently begun to step up the intensity of my hamstring work, as there is little to no pain when working hams (as opposed to quads). I have an appointment with the doc on Feb 14, but can't be certain how far along my knee will have progressed. If it keeps up at its current pace, it will be a non-issue by then...but if its not.

Who here has had a knee scope, and what kind of rehab am I potentially liiking at here?

Would you recommend the procedure?

Thanx,

Moe

Hmmm...I have a bonus scar because the damn thing wasn't working. Really handy eh? 3 fat scars and 2 dots.

Well, depends on how you feel. But if it is your knee you prob should be careful. See how it feels but take it easy till you see the doc again. Can't really help you too much but that's all i can say.

I've had the knee scoped twice, it's betwenn a 30-45 minute procedure. The rehab for a scope is regaining movement, flexion and extension. After you get both flexion and extension back, then they work on strength and movement. Cutting and lateral movements, it also depends on what the therapists' backround. Not all follow this treatment. It's like 2-3 month rehab. The rehab also depends on the damage done.

strider...you are from my kneck of the woods (Chicago)...where did you have the procedures performed?

I'll be getting cut (if I get cut) at Resurrection Hospital on Talcott.

In 1987, I had a 4-wheeler accident that caused me to jamb my knee into it's metal foot peg. As the nurse was cleaning my slashed knee, she dug out a piece of bone. They called in a bone specialist who scoped my knee and irrigated it. I was on crutches for 3 weeks. I was a runner back then and was afraid that my running days were over. The doc said it was up to me whether I ran again or not. He stressed that the sooner I started with rehab and the more agressive I was with it, the better. It hurt like a mother but I did what he told me. I was back to running short distances in 2 months and back to pre-accident condition in about 5 or 6 months. I don't run any more, but I have my squat up to 525 with no problems from the knee. I get a "catch" in it once in a while which is no bother and I figure that I'll probably have arthritis in it one day, but hell, I'm 46 and so far, so good!

Rehab...

Pete,

Congratulations on your rehab. I'm happy to hear that you overcame your injury and didn't let it stop you from achieving your training goals. Too many people use injuries as excuses. That's one of the reasons powerlifting is the great sport it is. Powerlifters train with pain from time to time and when injuries occur they use good, common sense to rehab and exceed previous ability levels. Torn pecs, blown out knees, slipped discs.... you name it and there is a committed powerlifter out there that overcame the problem and continued to train at levels previously unattained. Very inspiring!

Moe,
What's up, I'm out in the western suburbs, Elmhurst. I got my first one done at the center for health, that got infected, from the operating room, no less.
Had the second one done at Elmhurst memorial. Good luck w/your operation bro. The rehab does go fast. If you decide to go with it.

The knee scope is not bad. Anything else will take a little longer. I was supposed to have mine scoped years ago.. but I never did. It got worse.. alot worse. I know limp in the morning and doing legs is hard.. at best.

The thing is with knee deterioration and derangement.. it gets worse. I let mine get horrible. I also shattered my right kneecap.. this is why mine is so accelerated.

My advice is to just have it looked at by a few diffrent orthos and then go to a ortho doctor who only does sports medicine.

Good Luck.
