Is it OK to train abs every training day?

Is it OK to train abs every training day?

Or will I be overtraining?

I think I remember hearing that it IS ok to train them everyday, but I'm not certain.

Why would you want to. I dont believe that any bodypart could handle being hit every training day, but the bottom line is that it's not necessary. A while back I took the advice of a nationally ranked powerlifter and started training mine with weight, same as any other body part. For the past few years it is the only routine I have followed, and at most I do it 1x per week and it only takes a few minutes. And as a result I have ab muscles that bulge so noticeably that I can still see them when over 10% bodyfat. When ripped, they look sick, all on 1x per week. It also boosted my squats and deads as well

Well I follow Westside, so I end up hitting weighted ab work anwhere from 3 to 5 days per week... But, I only do 4 or 5 sets each time..

When you consider how many other things you do in the gym that incorporate abs, you would definitely be over training. But even if that weren't the case, if you trained them every day, when would they ever have a chance to recover and grow?

Good question. I have been thinking a lot about this recently. Too many conflicting ideas. Most trainers at my gym say everyday.

I remember hearing (I think), that you can train Fast Twitch muscles more often... up to everyday.

.... I also believe hearing that the abs were one of those Fast Twitch muscles.

......... hence the question.

I have been training them every training day for a few weeks now. I actually like to train abs. I'd like them to buldge out so that one can see my abs through a tight shirt (like wifebeaters or something)...... Not that I'm going to wear that in public, but that is my goal.

Even fast twitch fibers need recovery time. Maybe you can benefit from training them more often. But every day? I don't think that's necessary.

Me = twice a week after back and then after thighs. Six sets with 60 seconds or less rest between them. It's all leg raises (not knee raises except to finish) and cable crunches. You need weight to build abs that are noticeable. Doing untold numbers of reps is just a cardio exercise. I never go more than 20 reps and usually I'm in the 8-15 range. They're like any other muscle in that if you want to build 'em, you need to work against progressively stronger resistance.

:spin:

If you have a layer of fat then trying to grow your abs may not be the best thing to do. This will just push the fat forward and make it look gross. Getting your abs to grow is good if you have low bodyfat, depends on waht you're goals are. I'm just looking for a fat stomach.
