Is it a waste taking R-ALA after a meal instead of before?

Better late than never! I take about 400mgs before my typical meals, and about 600-800mgs before meals on my "cheat day". BTW, I also had juvenile diabetes as a kid, just my blood sugar is already messed up to begin with.

It's much better to take it before to keep the insulin response to the carbs low. But after is ok too.
 
The absolute best time is 15 minutes prior to the first bite. But that's only percentage points better than just before.

I'm assuming this really applies well with your PW shake (more so then solid food)...take the r-ALA 15 minutes before completeing the workout, and then drink the dextrose/whey immediately? That way your body is primed for the dextrose.

I've been taking it a couple minutes before my PW shake, but not 15 minutes. Looks like I may need to take it a little earlier.
