I need a diet that isn't

I agree with that philosphy for gaining/maintaining and even cutting to a degree, but I try to keep my carbs in the very low glycemic range and keep them small replacing with good fat and protein. The idea is to convince the body to burn fat for fuel after all stored carbs are burned off. If you ingest carbs right before or after training your body will use that for fuel and not the stored fat/carbs. But anything is worth a try!

Gotcha... but post training your muscles are especially vulnerable and would be better to burn stored sources at a different time (off days).

Again this is my opinion so its really up to you how to go about it.

true, it is really where you have to experiement to find what works for you.

The whole point of post-workout protein + dextrose for ex, is exactly w/ what PF said -- you've burned all your glycogen from training and the fast-acting carbs will be used right away to replace the burned glycogen. I personally don't really do that - I tend to just slug a protein shake within 30 min of getting home and then a real meal w/ at least some veggies within an hr after that. I've read some places where that whole dextrose thing post workout doesn't make that much of a diff for women, but I don't know - I'm not real concerned about muscle mass & all that so its just not a big deal for me.

Personally I don't think I would find an apple or some small amount of simple carbs to be sufficient to fuel serious work outs. (Not to mention I can't handle apples on an empty stomach...) That's what I like about carb cycling in that you drop the carbs for only 2 days max before your metabolism starts to slow down when it realizes the carbs aren't coming anymore, then reload and start the drop again.

Here's a link to something I wrote w/ some descriptions:

Everything in your posts makes sense and I do try to do that. In fact, the number one thing I notice is I do get stupid the first couple of weeks on low glycemic carbs as it takes me that long to adjust to alternate fuels. I am gonna put all the advice to good use.!
