Howcan i stop shy around girls?

So this is what im working on right now, getting my confidence level up. i seem to become a shy kid when im around girls, i dont know why. i never use to be like this, because i was a very talkative kid. i mean maybe because i hang around guys too much, almost all of my friends consists of guys.
My buddys tell me to talk more, but i dont talk when i dont have anything good to say. i feel like if i say something stupid in front of the girl, she'll think im a retard. im also very self concious, thats why my first step is getting bigger. so can someone give me some tips on being non-shy around girls, what are things i can say or do?
