How would you train if you were going to be a police officer or corrections officer?

Just curious on everyones ideas and opinions. I start my first day as a CO in the county jail tomorrow. I am wanting to get out on the road and be a police officer one day but I have to pull my time in the jail first. I am curious as to how you guys would train if this was your job day in and day out, dealing with screwed up convicts and such. What I am asking is what you would concentrate on, or what all would you do to stay in shape, how would you lift, what kind of cardio, etc. I still have to go to the academy and I am in good shape for that, its all pushups and running. But once I get back I was going to cut back on the running(not quit, cut back) and hit the weights harder. What is everyone's idea of the most important aspect of training for this job?
 
most police officers don't train at all. so if you just utilize a sound diet and solid lifting routine combined with some moderate running, i would say you'll be set. (my mom and stepdad are police officers and my dad is a u.s. marshal, and none of them train in any way).
 
Thanks for replying bro. I realize this is true for most of them. I am just an over-achiever and want to be the best or at least try my best at everything. Thats why I asked how you guys would do it. I have been powerlifting for ever it seems or training for a sport but now this is my new goal. I just want to be in the best all around shape for the job if I ever NEED it.
 
Academy training is a joke, so are the weekly or bi-weekly PT days for CO's(if you even have them).

But, to get prepared for the inevitable scraps, pl and ol is your best bet. Also, take some decent NHB classes, traditional ju-jitsu is good, as well as judo, because the hand to hand stuff the department will teach you is shit, and will usually cause you more trouble than it will get you out of.
 
Thanks Thai. I will most likely be hitting up a power based routine when I return from the academy hitting compound movements etc. I will also probably cut down to 2-3 days of running per week only 20 min or so of running each session. I am in a shitty area for self defense training. We have karate and thaikwondo(sp???) and some bullshit kick boxing. There is one guy that teaches hapketo(sp???) and is supposedly a bad ass but I know nothing about any of them in all honesty. There is also a pretty decent boxer in my area that I could possibly train with. I want to put on some good size once I get back but I more interested in being well rounded. I dont need to be as strong as a powerlifter or as big as a bodybuilder or fast as an olympic sprinter or have the endurance of a tri-athlete, I just want to be well rounded in all the above. Make sense?

Thanks Sofa. I am not too worried about the academy now. I am going to continue to run 2-5 miles 3 times per week. My running will be like this. I will run 5 miles(moderate pace) on Saturdays on a flat 1/4 mile track. On Tuesdays I will be running 2 miles cross country. On Thursdays I will run 3 miles Fartlek(intervals).
My lifting will be like this. On Mondays I will be hitting chest, shoulers(minimal), and triceps. Wednesdays I will be hitting back and biceps and on Fridays I will be hitting Legs. I will be hitting some sort of abs or obliques on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. I will also be hitting the lower back really hard as well.
I am just not sure what I can do as far as some self defense type training. I am very limited to self defense training around here. Like I said before there is an amature boxer in our town that is about to go pro that I could possibly train with, there is some Karate classes, there are some Taekwondoe, and Hapkido(sp?)
I dont know what is a good idea to do. Is there any type of self taught self defense lol???

IMHO you are best off training with the amateur boxer until you can find a mauy thai class. Karate, hapkido, etc... can be okay... but I stress that with no enthusiasm... for the most part karate teachers will drill you with really counter productive worthless shit.

I've never known anyone who regretted studying boxing. I've known many people who felt they wasted years in aikido, tae kwon do, etc...

Stay basic and stay effective. boxing is as basic as it gets.

Deadlift, ab work, 1 arm snatch, 1 arm bent press. Cant get any better than this.

There is nothing tougher and more conditioning that high rep 1 arm snatch....
