How would you train if you were going to be a police officer or corrections officer?

One thing to keep in mind with regard to self-defense training: some departments have specific policies against using anything other than department-approved techniques on the street. I have 2 friends that are cops, and are in martial arts training, and will not use anything they've learned in class on the street, period.

Thanks everyone, Project-nice thought, I didnt really even consider that. I may have to check into that. I may actually spend my time this winter lifting and trying to gain some more size(I am 180 now, maybe get to 200) and gain some strength. I am also thinking of going down the street to my old high school and talking to the wrestling coach and see if I can catch a practice every now and then.

been in your same shoes man. True, most officers don't lift so you'll be a step ahead. but, who really cares what MOST officers do when it's YOU that's in the fight. All you care about is saving YOURSELF not other lazy officers.

Man, the cardio is the key and it sucks. But for real....when you're in a fight....cardio is what keeps you going. I used to lift a ton with no cardio...now I gotta get my cardio up to match my liftin.

The really tough cops where I was at were in awesome cardio shape AND muscular shape. You gotta put in the time on the tredmill man and in the weightroom. hey good luck.

anyone have any information on academy training??? I heard tons of cardio wiht pushuips, pullups situps etc. Any idea on average runs etc. If I were you i would trian for academy type events and couple times a wk tossing in weight workout, couple excercises core movements. You said your an over achiever, then good, be the best endurance guy out there (dont show it that much though) so you can concentrate on studying for the academy tests, you dont want the physcial workouts taking their toll on your studying... anyways...

Stretch your asshole out real big. All the cops and most co's are big assholes.

No realy, I would build strength and grapple\box.

Man, what academy are you going to? Not all of them are jokes. I'll probably be heading off to Montgomery's which is the 3rd hardest in the nation. Try PT everyday for your first 3 weeks. Everything from 3 mile street runs to pushups, the like. They drag you into the ground and make you really decide if its something you want to do. 3 hours of sleep a night because of you 6-9 hours of homework, waking up at 6, running your 3 miles, make no mistake, not all police academy's are cherry pie.

If I were in your shoes I would train my grip, forearms, and hand strength very hard. Get an ironmind catalog and find a copy of dinosaur training. Also do big compound movements like standing presses, deads, and squats. You will be suprised how powerful your entire body becomes when you can pull and squat alot of weight.

I was a guard at Texas Dept of Corrections for 10 years. First few years I worked out like my life depended on it and you know...it was my best performance obviously.

My new job is so laid back that my workouts are not as intense.

County jail will best serve you by doing grip exercise (deadlifts do best for me) and a good upper body compund movement like bench.

Just remember, if you use your head you can diffuse many situations and not have to resort to force. Matial arts are illegal in a correctional setting, but can make for a relaxing off time activity. Never try to break up a fight by yourself. There is no such thing as a "secret" in prison so keep your business to yourself. Good luck and Godspeed bro.
