How to you plan food reduction with age?

I have read here on the boards not long ago, that as we age we must eat less and less, because otherwise it all goes to fat. But how can you tell that the time has come to reduce food, and by how much would you reduce it?

I don't think that there can be any exact age of amounts of food to be eaten – it is a very individual thing. Therefore, you just need to pay attention to your body, and make due adjustments. If you see that fat is coming it, start reducing food, little by little.

When I stop working out (so never) or I'm not hungry. Or my ass is dragging on the floor.

every year you age you need to reduce calories a day by about 10 or so. you can google calorie calculator and play around with that #

it isn't crazy much but obviously someone who is 50 will not be able to eat the same as a 20 year old

my advice is reducing restaurant food because there are a lot of hidden calories in their meals. butter and oil is a killer.. in my neck of the woods a lot of old people like to eat out like all the time, they just get too lazy to food shop and cook and that is not good

Probably true of average joes. Not so much athletes.

The only reason you need to eat less as you age is because generally speaking - we become less active as we age.

That whole 'your metabolism slows' as you age thing is primarily a myth.

Keep exercising and stay active and you don't really need to lower your calorie intake. I have a couple clients who are in their 60s and they eat well over 2k calories every single day and are in single digit body fat levels.

So @muskate, if I understand you correctly, if I will keep training hard as I age, there will be no need to reduce food intake? is that correct?

Just go online and use a TDEE calculator. It accounts for things like age, sex, level of activity, body fat, etc......and will give you a good idea of how many calories you burn in a day.

Correct.

Lower metabolism is the result of inactivity which causes a loss in muscle.

Stay active, keep your muscle, keep your metabolism.

Simple as that.
