how many members can rep 225 on bench press for 40 reps

next time you work chest, warm up, then put 225 on the bar and rep it till you cant lift it no more, then rack it, run over to the dumbells and grab them and hit them for about 8-10 reps............see what kind of burn and pump you get........do this for about 3 sets, since you are supersetting that with db's that will be 6 sets of flatbench to start, a good way to start your workout, try it sometime just for a change!

I don't think I could get 40....never tried....I know for sure over 20 though (when cutting sometimes I'll do sets of 20).

Exactly, the only way to really count a rep is to do one like you would in contest.

Also by pausing it, not laying it, on the down stroke you get more work on the muscles which will make you stronger and larger.

Cn1, are those full reps, or those half ones like they accept at the football combines? Anyhow, maybe I'm wrong on this, but are you suggesting that you do reps on 225 instead of benching 500 in a workout? I don't think that if you bench 225/40 times you can bench 500 for 1 or 2. Plus you are building endurance and stamania on those high rep sets. It wouldn't transfer over to low rep sets.

no actually when I bench I warm up with 135 for 3 sets, the first set I do 6 reps, I take the bar down real slow for a neg, then rest it on the chest for like 10 seconds, then push up real slow, do this 6 reps.........then when I actually start benching, when I do a rep I take the bar down and keep it an inch or so from touching the chest, so you dont bounce and you dont break the compound of the bar by bouncing or hitting the chest..........and buttmuncher you forget 500lb bench is pure strength, repping is endurance, a sprinter cant run as far and effective as a long distance runner, thats why after you do the reps on 225 you grab the 100lb db's for 8 reps, the streghth part.

john woe, you missed the part, after I bench 225 for 40 reps, I jump up and immediately grab the 100lb, dumbells for 8-10 reps, that is the strength part of the superset.

Flat barbell benching is worthless in my opinion. Want a big wide thick chest stick to heavy incline benching, nuff said. Sombat

225 x 40 is impressive, I think Leonard Davis from UT (1st round pick) did something like 225 x 36 and he weighs like 360lbs.

That's great if you can do it. I've never done a set of 225 past 12 reps, I always increase the resistance so as the muscles don't become accustomed to the same weight. I had a buddy who could press 185lbs for 15 reps and couldn't get a max of 225lbs. What's up with that - he never felt the heavier weight. This is why people do negatives. You can work out with the same weight all day long - you might as well do the same bench routine for the rest of your life - you will stagnate.

Considering those huge rep numbers - I wouldn't consider doing 80 or 100lbs dumbs a strength workout.
Me personally, could probably only do 12-15 reps at 225lbs. but I work out with 120-130 lbs dumbs when I do dumb presses (flat bench). I use 100lbs for inclines.

It's all about what you like - you are a rep guy, I like smaller sets with heavier loads.
We would probably both benefit by incorporating aspects of both of these types of training into our own routines. But, most importantly changing routines often is a must. (and I believe resistance as well)

I might be able to get 20-25 max. I could probably come closer to 40 reps with 225 on squats.

40 sounds pretty impressive though. Good Job.
