How important is sleep?

How important is sleep? I lift and eat moderatley but sleep horribly. Probably 5.5 hours on a good night and about 3.5 on a bad night. This of course is a result of school.

OMG i would die. guess some people can get by with this but EVERYONE can benefit from sleep. that means at least a good 8 hours. 7 being the least.

confusing tangent....

You mean these 'pink elephants' I see after a night of binging aren't real.

I wouldn't train on days after a bad night sleeping. I'll just go home chow a lot food and get to bed early. You need rest to grow. Try over the counter sleeping aids every once in while. Thats why body builders take so many sups because where trying to get our body at a high level of nutrition for optimal growth. Maximize your efforts through nutrition and rest then training.

FHM magazine

had an article on sleep deprivation recently. It told the story of one family that inherits a condition that will not allow their brain to rest. This usually kicks in about age 50 and they are usually dead within five years so I would say sleep is not a luxury, it's a necessary. Whenever you see someone over 100 talking about the secret to their longevity, it always comes up that they somehow have consumed a pint of liqour a day since they were 30. It's not the liquor, it's the sleep from the hangovers that allow them to live this long.

I think it's quite the debateable subject. I have to disagree with you here, Blood&Iron. Go figure, right? I'd say 8 is somewhat of an arbitrary number that takes into account individual needs. Personally, when I start getting 9-10 hours a night I'm more tired than when I get about 7. I read a little snip it from Flavio Bacciani and he said that he only gets about 4 hours. Can't argue with his physique. I also remember something about Napoleon only getting around 3hours.

Hey did Flavio Bacciani win Mr.O? and what happened to Napoleon? He probably had 3 hours of sleep before the Battle of Waterloo and couldn't get his strategies straight. then he was exiled and i heared he slept in excess of 18 hours a day and had sex the other 6.

No but seriously i need at least 8-9 or else i'm dead in the gym the next morning because i workout at 7:00AM. Besides that i feel more energized and the reason you might say you feel less tired with 3 hours of sleep compared to 8 is because your body hasn't completely gone into REM sleep.
