musclemom said:Absolutely, it's really mostly mental. My husband uses 23 g. needles, he was shocked at how easy it was to stick himself. It's just physically hard when it came to depressing the plunger (I thought he was yanking my chain until he said, "HERE, you do it." HOLY shit that stuff's thick!). It's a lot easier if someone else can do it from a leverage perspective.
The patch may work for your dad. What's important is that he finds a positive way to take care of himself. Being over 50 does not mean you have to be depressed, or lack energy or enthusiasm for life. My husband is only 5 years younger than your dad, and he's acting like he did more than 10 years ago, in every respect.

My husband just didn't do well on transdermal test. cream. His doc put him on every two week injectible test but he was crashing too hard in the second week, so the doctor was talking about inserting pellets. We did some reading (finding the best info right here in this very forum), and hubby didn't really care for what he read about the pellets, so he decided to face his fears and go with the once a week injectible test. His doctor taught him how to do his own glute injection yesterday.
Now the thing is, my husband has had a mild needle phobia his entire life, but the HRT makes him feel "more better" than the fear scares him. If he said "Honey, I shot myself in the ass with a needle!!!" once yesterday, he must have said it five times!!! I'm actually proud of him; I know that sounds silly, but it was a big step for him and seeing how much happier he is since getting his levels up to where they finally should be is such a joy! Actually, his levels are in the 1300s (he's 53), the man's got more wood than a lumbar-yard![]()
It's amazing the difference it's made in his mental outlook!!! I'll never understand why doctors don't check hormone levels (in both men and women) before they even consider prescribing antidepressants! This is the absolute truth: One year ago, he was so bleak that his GP had written him a prescription for Lexapro. If it wasn't for the things I learned on EF, which got me to ask him to get his hormones checked before he went on more drugs, he would have started taking antidepressants![]()

MM, when you say your husband didn't do well on the cream, was it that his levels didn't improve? How long was he on the cream before switching?
I just saw an endo this morning for the first time... my natty test levels have always been low, so I'm about to take the plunge... having more bloodwork tomorrow and then we see if it's TRT or clomid, etc. Hopefully the former, not the latter. The doctor mentioned if I go onto TRT, it'd be the gel form. Everything I've heard about the gel is not promising, so hopefully I can convince him to put me on injectable.
Injections are best, but rarely prescribed outside of clinics. Topicals are more common. I had good luck. Even Androgel pushed all my numbers and was easy to use.
Now he's on 2 ml of test once a week and WOW![]()
