Because it's played out and yesterday's trend. They didn't completely depart from it though. It's instantly recognizable as a Mustang, the proportions and key design elements are all there.

Modern and sleek is in. I don't think they went far enough with it though.

The idea here is that they want it to sell in Europe and Asia as well as America, and the "Mustang heritage" image means nothing over there.
