Key is to keep heels about 6-9 inches off the ground...that means the legs have to be straight.......increases the resistance and when you do the bicycles...upper body has to be in motion as well...elbow to opposite knee

well, I think the sissors might be out, I did that and the back started to hurt right fro mthe get go, so I bent my knees and then it did nothing.

Bicycles I always to it that way. I am glad I am doing something right LOL.

So with the TUT

it is lift/hold/lift/hold/lift/hold/lift/hold go back down? I used to do that, is that right? I just never type it in cause it is a lot to type LOL.

you can always roll a towel underneather the lumbars....the pain is telling you that those muscles arent being attended to.

TUT.....

you need to be doing each rep on a 6-7 second cadence IF you are doing 8 reps.

3:3

3:4

should I be doing more reps? and yup you can give me one of these :smash: but I don't under stand the 6-7 second cadence 3:3 3:4. use small words, small LOL

Found this article hee hee

is it ok to post???

Give us a few seconds and we’ll give you stronger and bigger muscles. No, we’re not promising that you can work out for less than a minute (different magazine, different day). What we are promising is that if you focus on a specific range of seconds, you’ll challenge your muscles in an entirely new way. You see, while reps, sets and rest time are important variables in your workout, the total amount of time you spend actually doing each set of an exercise can also be critical to reaching your training goals. However, this time component rarely has been taken into account when putting together a weight-training programme… until now.
Time under tension (TUT) is a way of calculating the total amount of work you place on a muscle. It refers to the total time a muscle resists weight during each set. For example, if you did the barbell curl and it took you two seconds to curl the weight up and another two seconds to lower it, that’s four seconds of tension per rep. Performing 10 reps at this pace would take a total of 40 seconds. Therefore, the TUT for that set is 40 seconds. If you increased the speed of those reps to about three seconds, then it would take you only 30 seconds to complete a 10-rep set. Although the number of reps and the amount of weight are the same, the second set might not increase your muscle mass to the same level as the first. And that’s the basis of TUT training: focus on sets that last for a certain amount of time based on your training goals. For maximising strength, the ideal TUT is about 20 seconds or less; for muscle mass, it’s at least 40 seconds; and for muscle endurance, it’s at least 70 seconds.
Don’t abandon set and rep ranges just yet, though — you have good reason to focus on them. Research shows that the best way to gain muscle strength is by performing 1–6 reps per set; for muscle growth, your ideal rep range is 8–12; and for muscle endurance, 15–30 reps prove most beneficial. The problem is that all these ranges assume that each rep takes about four seconds to complete. If you extrapolated those figures, you’d assume that the best TUT ranges are 4–24 seconds for strength, 32–48 seconds for growth and 60–120 seconds for endurance. However, strength coaches and training experts have tweaked those values based on their own experience: Although no controlled research has been done on the subject, their anecdotal evidence suggests that the best TUT ranges are 4–20 seconds for strength, 40–60 seconds for growth and 70–100 seconds for endurance.

IT’S ABOUT TIME
TUT ranges allow you to be more precise about the amount of work you place on a muscle. Using the barbell curl example, if you did 10 reps at four seconds per rep, you worked the muscle for 40 seconds, which coincidentally is the optimal TUT to stress a muscle for gains in mass. But if it took you only three seconds to complete each rep (a TUT equal to 30 seconds), you weren’t training the muscle optimally for growth, even though the reps are in the proper range.
This doesn’t mean you should stop counting reps. When you’re training for muscle mass, continue to shoot for 8–12 reps. But incorporating TUT training into your routine can allow you to widen that rep range to about 6–15 per set, as long as you stay within the TUT range of 40–60 seconds. So if you decide to perform six reps of barbell curls, you would need to slow down your reps to about seven seconds per rep for a total of 42 seconds of TUT. If you did 15 reps of barbell curls, you’d need to keep the reps to about 3–4 seconds for a total of 45–60 seconds of TUT. (You don’t have to take notes: “Reps and TUT” below, will help you calculate the optimal reps, rep speed and total TUT for reaching your training goals.)
To monitor your rep speed and total TUT for every set, you need to watch the clock. If you train with a partner, have him time you with a stopwatch, help you count off reps at the right speed and keep you in your TUT window. If you train alone, however, timing gets trickier. Try positioning yourself in view of a wall clock or use a watch with a second hand or timer. You can also estimate your time by counting off with the one-one thousand system: count the time it takes to complete each rep and the set, starting with one-one thousand and counting up.
Regardless of your training goals, it’s important to vary your reps and TUT times within the range of your goal so you don’t get stuck in a rut. Make weekly modifications

LMAO

Thats basically what my thread states.

Im not sure where the confusion lies

keep your reps to 7 seconds.....for 8 rep sets

3 positive
4 second negative

Kay LOL.

Sorry the links above you have to really really search to find the answers, there is almost too much information in the links, and then there are links to other links that have 500 posts in them.

Don't get me wrong, I think they are absolutley friggin fantastic, however, for me it is a lot of information to sift through. I try to read a little everyday. The shadow project links I downloaded them and printed them off too

Thanks again

EVERYTHING you need to know is in my thread.

STRENGTH - 20-40 seconds per set
SIZE - 40-60 seconds per set
ENDURANCE 60-and up.

EACH SET SHOULD FALL WITHIN WHATEVER phase you are in.

SO......8 reps........for size you need to be in the 40-60 second tier.

what is 60 seonds divided by 8 reps??

ABOUT 7 seconds per rep....about 3 on the positive and 4 on the negative

If you were using 5 reps per set...EACH REP WOULD NEED TO BE ABOUT 12 SECONDS EACH (60/5).

Another question oh great wise one LOL...

Lets just say I was going to do the competition in april or june, I should still be bulking, yes/no? and if I am not doing the competition my goal would be to get a little muscle back and lean out.

Depends on where you are now in terms of weight, BF and what type of show..I assume figure.

Allow 1 week per 1% bf needed to lose to get to 10-12% plus 2-3 weeks for a time frame

looks like june LOL. 150.2 pounds and lord knows the BF% I could guess at 25% but I weigh more than I did last year at this time, and last year it was 30%, but I know I have more muscle this time gotta get that checked next week.

and yup figure, if I don't do at least one show it will be the one regret I have in life. sounds silly, but its one of those things on the list of things to do.

Hiya SuperCK! :wavey:

Today's thread discussion is perfectly timed LOLOL. I've been asking :theshadow TUT questions on his other thread.

I agree with what you said in an earlier post, that there is sooooooo much information to sort through. I'm trying to learn more about proper training that I read and read and always manage to wind up confusing myself. :freak:

Yup that is me too, then I go to try it and I am all fucked up. I bring my notes with me and I do a set, stop go back and look at my notes to see if I am doing it right, then go back and correct myself and do it again. While the whole time my girls are sitting there holding my smaller weights, asking if they can help me LOL. It is really funny to watch. There I am saying just a minute gotta read this...

LOLOLOL I can just picture the little ones asking if they can help.

I'm getting my goals set for 2007 and fitness is one of them. I know that if I get time to train it won't be a lot so I will need to "on it" so that I can get in get done and get out and still make progress.

I'm hoping that I can cut my hours at job 2 back around March and if I can then I might be able to squeek out training 2 days a week - just have to wait and see. Right now I'm evaluating, re-evaluating, learning and re-learning everything related to my diet and potential exercise regimens.

you and I should start a log together LOL, that would be me exactly too!

Relatives are starting to arrive today for the three day feastaviles lol. Big ukranian dinner almost ready for christmas eve and I have to remember to take the turkey out tomorrow for christmas day LOL.

I am going to be eating as clean as possible, with the exception of christmas eve dinner (3 bags of dough, 2000 dollars later on food, and a whole week of cooking you better believe I am going to enjoy it LOL)

Have a good one and be safe.

Wow, $2000 later??!! I can only imagine the Ukranian feast you'll be having! :RADAR But yes, dig in and enjoy it. Remember it is after all only one day, eat guilt-free and then jump right back on the wagon.

As for doing a show, if it is a goal of yours, go for it in full gusto. Remember you don't have to be perfect - just as long as you know you gave it your best when you're standing up there on stage, you've already won (and accomplished that dream of yours!)

Happy Holidays! :santa2: :gift:

It was o.k. I think I have my feuding for the year completed now. I have had more confrontation this month then I care to have in 10 years'. It was mediocre because I didn't get to see my brother and his family since they didn't come up from Georgia. It was just another day in my book. I was fortunate to spend another Christmas with my mother despite the circumstances. Actually that was Christmas Eve. Christmas Day SBT and I stayed in PJ's and blankets watching movies till like 5:00 before we changed to hit the gym at like 7 p.m.
How about you?

Sorry to hear about all the feuding THAT sucks, and not just cause it is christmas time, it sucks anytime, but I hope it is all done with and tell anyone that wants to pick a fight with you anymore to try again in 2007 cause you are done for the year!

staying in the pj's sounded fun!

Mine was great, christmas eve was a blast and went over very well, we had more people than expected but we found chairs, a couple things I will change next year, like more room between tables but it is all good.

Christmas day the kids got up at 4:30 am, we told them to go back to bed but then I got all excited and got up at 5:00 sooo we were all very tired all day long, my company didn't come till 5 and left at 7 but I didn't care cause we were sooo tired. We watched pirates of the caribean but I have to watch it again cause I didn't get any of it LOL.

Boxing day went over to my parents and got to see my brother cause he came down from BC, and the rest of the family on my mom's side

Today my parents, hubby's parents and my brother are coming over here. We just finished cleaning the house and took the tree down already so I am happy the house is clean.

My brother is a plumber and he is going to do the pluming for the upstairs shower and then we are tiling it. (not all this week of course)

and my dad is an electrician and he is doing the basement, or at least seeing what needs to be done today

My hubby's dad is going to install the garage door opener

and I am going to BINGO tonight with the ladies and my grama (that is why we are going)

I'm so happy yours' went so well after all that work you put into it!!!!
Sounded like a very good time!!!

No joke about no more pickin fights with me... That's why I shut people off because then there is no pickin with someone that you don't know anything about. Funny because my goal this past year was to open up more to people and not be so to myself. Well if I would have stuck by my old goal I wouldn't have been in ANY of the talks I had. Pro's and con's to both sides. So this next year is to find a happy medium between the two :lmao:

Well it was one of those questions I asked him

"Do these jeans make my ass look big?"

His response "no your fat ass makes your ass look big" I did have to laugh at that one.

Then the other questions came. " do I really look fat? and I wanted an honest answer so he told me that since I have gained 20 pounds since this summer it all went on my booty, and some on my stomach he is right soooo.

I know what I gotta do.

Have a Happy New Year :rose:

Thanks I am hoping it will be!

We were supposed to go skidooing, unfortunately friday I hurt my back again.

Last night I started getting severe pain in my upper back this time radiating to my chest, almost to the point where I couldn't breath. I am pretty sure they were muscle spasms cause the pain stayed but then it would get really really bad, so if anyone knows for sure, information would be appreciated. I tried a heating pad, jacuzzi and 2 extra strength robaxiset and it helped me fall asleep, this morning my whole back is sore.

So with that we will go out to dinner and go into town for the festivities and fireworks, maybe go see the lights.

GOALS FOR NEW YEAR (THE SHORT VERSION lol)
However, January 2nd I hope to be back at the gym, yup I am one of those people with the gym resolution LOL.
Get my hubby into some courses,
put my son into swimming
and my girls start gymnastics this year!
finish my course and start another
possibly get a part time job
go skiing as much as physically possible
accept things I cannot change for the moment and do everything I can to change the things I can.

Diet is lookin real good there girlie!!! And no fat after a workout, but before should be ok :) I like to add almonds in with my pre workout shake (per sugg from Shadow this summer and MM here recently) and it seems to keep you sustained through your workout, or it has for me anyways so my $.02

dodododood whistling again....

I am generalizing here and stereotyping and being sexist BUT.... men tend to over do it a lot more than woman. When I feel pain, I stop doing what I am doing, most of the time :qt: .

I expect the fish over the head soon LMAO.

No fish from me, but................. I thinkthe wimmins on here show a lot more determination than your average hawtie, and/or housewife, or otherwise female attributed people.
Men don't over do anything. We just do what we do to excess. :verygood:
