few questions about squats/deads

some of these are kind of stupid, but i have been curious lately

1. my grip for squats used to be wider and i just narrowed it. It feels much better, and also helps me keep my lats tight. I feel like this is helping me to involve my upper back and today it was sore after i finished squats. Does this happen with a narrower grip more so than a wider grip of the bar?

2. just got chalk for deadlifts... only chalk they had @ the store was kids chalk for easter coming up lol. Is this sufficient enough, and where on my hands would i put the chalk?

3. i have some bruises on my shins/legs from deads- is this common?

Any suggestions/input is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

1. I prefer a narrower grip for exactly the reasons you listed. Help me keep a tighter arch and push up my shelf to hold the bar on.

2. That kind of chalk is probably going to hurt moreso than help. You can pick up gym chalk at most any sporting goods store and at a lot of supplement stores.

3. I need to get a vid up where I actually have blood running down into my socks from deads. So yes completely common.

If you crush up the kids chalk isn't it in essence the same as sports chalk only colored?

No one is typically a magnesium chalk the other a titanium chalk. Just like climbing chalk is a different blend. The titanium chalk is usually slicker and will slide easly on metal surfaces.

Interesting, chalk is one topic I have never read up on, thanks.

I have climbing chalk, I don't use chalk hardly at all for lifting but when I do (on deads) I use the climbing chalk. Is that not going to work as well as gym chalk?

Speaking of climbing, Scottsman we should get together and climb a couple of 14'ers sometime this summer...lol

ahh really? one of my friends who lifts @ school says he uses the chalk in the classrooms before deads and they help his grip, so i figured this would be good too.... Is it worth giving it a try?

oh and also, is it bad to have your knees over your toes? Mine don't go over my toes, but i am just wondering if this is a myth or not.

haha i'd love to see that vid :)

Give it a whirl and see, if it's just the plain white chalk it won't be as bad as colored.

Yes having your knees go out over your toes is bad. You should sit back first in the motion to alleviate this.

I'll try and get it uploaded this week sometime.

As for the climbing chalk question. Climbing chalk is fine for gym use but gym chalk shouldn't be used for climbing. Again it's a different composition and gym chalk can actually be slick on rock. I had a bunch of climber buddies in college and all of them tried gym chalk because it's less expensive but didn't work very well.

Cool thanks:) So it looks like climbing chalk is pretty all purpose for me then.
