Manny:
1. Taxes
In the US businesses that bring economic benefits
to their region get tax credits/write-offs/breaks, etc...
Tax breaks are needed for pro sports in Canada because
they need to compete with the salary structure of US
teams which are their direct competetors. If one looks
at the payroll of the average pro sports franchise along
with the revenues generated from games, ticket, food,
etc... sales the government is just plain greedy. They
can have a smaller percentage and keep that revenue
or they can tax the hell out of them and then they leave
and they can collect 65% of NOTHING. Just plain stupid
government.
2. TV/Radio. Yep, like I said, Loria did that on purpose.
3. Hockey. I know the wealth of these teams. When is
the last time they won a championship? Their payrolls
are disproportionately higher due to thehigher taxes and
although they are profitable, they can and will make more
and will compete at a higher level south of the border.
Just look what happened with Eric Lindros; he refused to
play for Toronto, much was due to the taxes on his salary.
Oh yeah, I forgot the Flames and the Canucks; we're just
looking for cities to put them in right now
