I'm finally going to get some chain and I just need to double check I'm getting the right stuff. For bench, as I understand it... I need:

Two 2' lengths of 1/4" chain which hang from the barbell.
Two clips to close off the 1/4" chains to form loops.
Two 5' lengths of 5/8" chain which I drape through the loops that the 1/4" chains make.

Also, I'm kind of confused about whether the 5/8" chain is supposed to be draped so it's doubled up, or if it's supposed to hang freely. But just tell me if I'm getting the right stuff because I can figure out the setup later.

One more thing I'm getting from reading old posts... is that hardware stores are ok to get the 1/4" chain and the clips, but for 5/8" chain you need look high and low. I've read that marine supply, tractor supply, or shipyards are the place to go. Has anybody got theirs from a junkyard? I'm looking to get it really cheap because money's tight.

thanks. -DOM

Hahaha!!

I was just scanning through the yellow pages looking for somewhere I could even call to ask if they had 5/8" chain without sounding like it was some prank call. "marine supply" none. "tractor supply" none. "boating equipment" looked hopeful. "junk dealer" a couple, but doubtful they'd have it. "towing supply" none.

So just to humor myself, I looked under "chain" and it turns out we have a chain store! How great is that? I found their website and it's actually a general metal supply company -- they carry up to 3/4" chain. Never discount the obvious.

Still, somebody help me out with what I need. I've read that I need 2 pieces of 2 foot long 1/4" chain. But that topper's diagram in the link Chad just put up shows that I need 2 pieces of 6.5" long 1/4" chain. So if somebody just posted what they use that'd be great. I'm going to go through the old Westside bench videos tomorrow and find the clip of their set up.

Just surfing some chain companies on the web. It seems it's pretty standard for 5/8" regular alloy steel chain to weigh between 360 - 420 lbs per 100ft depending on how much carbon is in it. Which equals 18 - 21 lbs per 5 ft piece of chain. I thought they were supposed to weigh 40 lbs per 5 ft. Maybe I should get the 3/4" ones.

The 5/8" chain should be apx 20 ponds per 5 foot section. Also the diagram on Toppers is correct. I followed it when getting my chains at it was perfect..

I just went and checked out a new gym and they've got everything -- chains included. So thanks for your help but I'm just getting a membership there instead of buying my own.
