ok did this body fat tester at the gym today ..the omron hand held body fat tester....are these things accurate????

Im 5'11"
196lbs

and it said i was 13% bf on the Normal person mode
and it said i was 10% bf on the athlete mode( IF you work out more than 3 times a week)

i mean is this pretty accurate...i mean i dont think i am that cut but dam i hope its right lol

no they are not accurate.. however they are better than nothing..

with the same setting, hold it out from your body.. now hold it closer to your body..

now do it when you are dehydrated, now do it before an workout and after..

each time it will give you a different reading..

how accurate can it be..

I hate those things..

and for women, depending on if they are menstruating will give a different reading..

They work on how fast the eletric signal is recieved from hand to hand.

So basically the faster the signal goes from your left hand through your body and out your right hand the less body fat you will have....

This gets affected by many factors. Such as h20, salt intake, menstration, etc.

So dont live and die by it, but its a good base to get an idea...

I use the calipers for like 8.99 and use a multi splot system

That's interesting. Hadn't thought of that. Which way does it through these things? My wife was recently asking about that. I have a Tanita scale that does basically the same thing. It's a guideline. Certainly wouldn't call it accurate but you can track a trend with them. If I'm getting leaner the "average" reading will get lower and vice versa.

Not accurate at all, as they use electrical resistance through the body to read the fat. Since the amount of water in your system, sweat (if any), thicker or thinner skin on the hands, age, occupation (manual or office work), and about a zillion other factors will throw off the readings.

My doctor has a very complicated body fat machine, which is supposed to be as accurate as the bath tub method. But above all, if you can see good definition on your abs, you're probably 10% or lower. If you can see every ripple on your abs, and every vein, you're in the 5-6% range. That's how I gauge mine, other than the official reading every 6 months or so. My last official reading last week was 5.7 (up from 5.3 last summer).

The only proper way of accurately measuring body fat is weighing yourself in a water tank. I think the scales/handhelds are good indicators if you are moving in the right direction or not, but once you get down to the 13-10% range you can see it in yourself anyways.
