Best Squat

Which method of performing the Squat does eveyone think is the best:-

1. Keep shins perpendicular to the ground and squat down to parallel

OR

2. let shins go forward (to your toes) and squat deep.


Does anyone do both?

I've been looking through pictures and it seems like the Powerlifter do option 1 and bobybuilders do option 2, is this because the bodybuilders are trying to focus on quad growth & the powerlifters are focusing on lifting strength?

Your opinions are very welcome as I'm not sure which to do or whether I should be doing both.

P.S. I train first for size second for strength
 
Powerlifters elect to sit back, in turn, causing the shins to track closer to perpendicular with the platform. These athletes are looking for the most efficient way for the body to move the most amount of weight possible. The position of their shins is a very small piece of large puzzle.
 
Also, you stated that powerlifters do option 1, keep shins perpendicular to the ground and squat down to parallel. Actually, powerlifters must squat below parallel. :)
 
It really depends on the athlete. If the knee extends past the knee/toe line, then this could be detrimental to the knee joint over time. A slight forward slant of the shin isn't a big deal if it's not too extreme. However, if you're a powerlifter and looking for efficiency, then it may be best to seek a vertical line. I prefer to see a perpendicular line or something close to it.
 
If you are powerlifting in a high level comp, try to keep your shins perpendicular to the ground, otherwise, just squat!!! :)

I try to keep my shins as perpendicular as I can during a below parallel squat. I train below parallel just like in competition. However, as much effort as I put in it, my shins still do tend to go forward anyway.
