I was watching this programme on TV last night about the Atkins diet and they basically said (after doing lots of testing on people for sometimes up to a couple of years) that the only reason people lose weight on atkins is beacuse protein makes you feel 'full up', they said that it probably had nothing to do with ketosis, nothing to do with the high fat intake and nothing to do with low intake of carbs.
They did a test with two twin brothers, for about a week (I think, I had just tuned in when this bit was on), kept in seperate rooms whilst constantly being monitered, one was on the Atkins diet and the other a low-fat diet, apparently the twin on atkins over thw whole week burned only 20 more calories that the other twin and they said that the ketones that were found in his urine totalled up to less than a single calorie.
They also said that when the body has to use protein or fat as fuel, the process use no more calories than when it uses carbs.
I didn't really know what to think when I had finished watching!
