Army Physical Fitness Test - Took One Today

Well it would have been nice to be a single man on campus drawing SSG pay, but it's great that you met that special woman. Yeah, drawing that BAH in SF is awesome, although I'm sure most of it goes right into your house. It's kind of like that where I am (DC area).

My Army story is a little different. I went to college first (Univ of Texas at Austin). Originally went on an Air Force ROTC scholarship but I am an Army Brat and really wanted to go Army (didn't get a scholarship from them). Eventually I quit AF ROTC, got my degree and then went to Army OCS (after spending 19 months as an enlisted soldier first).

I got commissioned FA and I've been on active duty for 20yrs as of last Sep. Right now I'm at the Pentagon but I'm off to Europe/NATO this summer.

Wow! 20 years.

I thought about the OCS route and was eligible when I got selected for the ADG2G. The Army selects 100 applicants per year and when I was one of them, I knew this was the right move.

My BAH more than covers my rent and so forth. I found a perfect place in the city. That was a must. I just PCS'd from the DC area and I swore to never deal with that 95 traffic ever again. Thankfully, my wife makes more than I do here!

I was stationed at Belvoir and specialized and taught the MILSTAR system. I occassionly taught folks at the Pentagon. I do miss the DC area - it was nice to be surrounded by a community that "cared." It's a heartbreak here in SF. I've been spit on called numerous names while in uniform, just walking to ROTC classes. I was even on the bus with my newborn child (one car is all you can really have here in SF) and I was yelled at and called a baby killer. Extreme I know, but the word tact doesn't exist. The city is trying to pass legislation that'll ban ROTC in high schools. It's understandable to be anti-war; but, the mass majority are anti-military.

I've heard great things about working for NATO and that was at an enlisted standpoint. I know you'll love it there sir. For myself, I've doubled my class load and I'm even taking summer courses to graduate a semester early. This was I can start law school for one semester before I commission. If I'm blesses, I'll get the education delay. If not, I'll just finish my JD on my own time.

Lastly, did I mention I HATED dealing with 95's melting pot traffic? (haha). I swore VA paid 10,000 people to drive during the rush hour traffic hours. It's a conspiracy!

You've already done very well and it looks like you're on your way to even bigger and better things. I hope you are able to knock out that Law Degree. Which school are you at? USF? Berkley? Did the Army allow you to choose the school?

ROTC at USF, degree program at GGU. The Army's only requirement for the program is I had to be a junior at any university associated with an ROTC program. As a younger solider, GGU was the only 4-year that offered a SOCAD agreement with my old MOS. I started taking online classes with them years ago and that's the univeristy I "belong" to.

About the law degree, even if I don't get the ed delay, I can elect for the graduate degree completion program prior to pinning CPT. Of course, I'll owe the army 2 days for every one day of graduate school. I'll take that option and request a branch transfer once I graduate.

There are a few option electives for the ROTC cadets now. I can guarantee my branch or 1st duty assignment if I give the Army 3 more years. Of course, I can elect for the graduate degree completion and so forth. Since I already have 7 years in and I'm planning to retire anyways, adding "promised" years is not a big deal for someone like myself :)

Able to say waht branch you are?

You guys are right. The whole test should be taken in BDUs. A ruck, swim, lift and haul. Combine it with qualification on the 9mm and rifle to make it like a modern pentathlon.

I know. Like being able to do 70 push ups and 80 sit ups in 5 minutes in shorts and a tee is going to protect you from an IED.

Now the running.......maybe! But again only in full gear!

What would be really cool would be if there was a team challenge. You and your unit have to get yourselves and all your equipment from point A to point B as quickly as possible. Exactly how you do it is up to the soldiers in your unit.

A and B might be a in a straight line of city streets, 2 miles apart. Or point B could be on the other side of a rugged mountain range from point A. And of course, everything in between.

Lumby we do have competitions like that, especially in Ranger and light infantry units, and they are a blast! The fitness test is just supposed to evaluate basic cardiovascular endurance and muscular endurance. I, like you, think it should still be more militarily oriented though.

When I worked for an Army agency in Alexandria we always invited our civilian employees out to take the test, and many of them did quite well.

Any Marines allowed in here? Oorah!
Nice score. I'm a 273 on the MC PFT.

That's awesome man! How many pullups did you knock out? Pullups are not a part of the standard Army Test, but when you are assigned to an airborne unit you have to do a minimum of 6 along with the other PT events on the test. Most of us would stop at 6 so we could do more pushups.

I maxed the pull ups and the crunches. That's where my points came from. My run is my weakness. I'm going to OCS this summer so I have been busting my ass lately by running a lot.
