Army Physical Fitness Test - Took One Today

Sounds like you were/are in great shape!

When I first joined the Army I was fast (<13 min) but couldn't max the pushups. II weighed about 170. I started maxing the test about ten years ago when I reached 200lbs and still ran the two mile under 14 min.

I've gotten a lot stronger and slower (over two miles anyway) since then.

It's interesting seeing who's in the Army and battling the PT test. I dread it and I always have. I'm 30 and my standards are at their peak to max. Let's just say, I've never maxed - period. The PT test has always been my weak spot.

I've exceeded all the other Army standards except the PT test. "Soldier of the Cycle," "Soldier of the Year," "NCO of the Year," etc, etc. I made E-6 in 4 1/2 years and just made the E7 list after 7 years; I might get to waer it for a month of 2 since I'll be commissioning this time next year (Active Duty Green to Gold).

Now that I'm becoming an officer, being a PT stud is a must. I hate that fact, but you guys know how it is. It was easier to score well on the PT test as a 175lb private; as opposed to being a 220lb SSG(P)/ROTC Cadet. I was actually told to drop my muscle mass so I can max the PT test. I told the Colonel I'd rather look good 365 days out of the year instead of twice a year for 30 minutes or so. I've done well for myself not being a PT stud. It still bothers me now that I cannot run 13 minute 2-miles anymore :worried:

Ok, enough of the rant! Just wanted to share my story and for you scoring as well as you're doing inspires me a bit.

Thanks

It's important for a 2LT to shine in PT, but usually because that's all he really knows when he shows up at a unit. In your case, as a former NCO you will know a lot so I don't see there being as much pressure to score 300.

Not only is it hard to maintain a bodybuilder physique during the PT test, it is hard all year because most unit PT programs are designed to do well on the test. When I started lifting seriously it was tough because I knew I'd be doing pushups 2-3 times a week and running 4 times a week.

I think your best friend will be a really good diet. Congrats on the Green to Gold!

Thanks man! It's actually the newer (2 years going) active duty green to gold; where I get to keep getting my pay and entitlements while in school. The regular green to gold, you have to get discharged 1st. It's definately a blessing.

Yes, you're definately right about the diet. :)

Wow, what a great deal that is! You're an ROTC cadet and college student who knows what the real Army is all about. You should get paid because you've got to be a trainng asset for that detachment.

On a campus full of starving college students you've got serious bank too, nice! I just hope you stayed single because it would be a damn shame otherwise.

Too late there man! You know how it is. But, I do get all the glories of having dependents. My BAH and COLA is based on San Francisco rates. :)

I really hate to leave just becuase of that!

What about you LH? What's your Army "story?"

Well it would have been nice to be a single man on campus drawing SSG pay, but it's great that you met that special woman. Yeah, drawing that BAH in SF is awesome, although I'm sure most of it goes right into your house. It's kind of like that where I am (DC area).

My Army story is a little different. I went to college first (Univ of Texas at Austin). Originally went on an Air Force ROTC scholarship but I am an Army Brat and really wanted to go Army (didn't get a scholarship from them). Eventually I quit AF ROTC, got my degree and then went to Army OCS (after spending 19 months as an enlisted soldier first).

I got commissioned FA and I've been on active duty for 20yrs as of last Sep. Right now I'm at the Pentagon but I'm off to Europe/NATO this summer.
