Army Physical Fitness Test in three weeks!

ttlpkg said:

You take that test once a year right? What is required to pass, and are upwardly mobile career-oriented officers expected to do well, as in the army? Or do they just try to pass the thing?

twice a year. i'm not sure what the passing score is for the new run. situps are 44 and pushups are 30 for males.

for the air force, they will be cutting the run down to a mile and a half starting next semester. the scoring will be even more difficult. to score a perfect you would need to run a 7:30 mile and a half, which comes out to 5min/mile. i can't do that for the life of me. if get down below 10min i will be happy.

It was a mile and a half when I got out in '93!

As I recall for USAF, once a year and pretty lenient timing, although the guys had it tougher, and old farts were allowed to walk 3 miles instead.

Yeah, I think that is what it was when I was in Air Force ROTC eons ago. We had to run 1.5 miles in under 12 minutes I seem to recall.

Thanks for the compliment ttlpkg.
I'm in a bit of a quandry at this stage though. I really don't know what direction to go in with my training. I know I need to focus on job performance more than anything else. I would also like to break the 2 minute barrier that seems to plague the women who compete in the Firefighter Combat Challenge. The best I've ever done is 2:34. I'm much stronger and faster now but don't know how to begin my yearly training system. Perhaps a few power/speed type lifts snatches/cleans etc. We'll see. All suggestions welcome. If anyone knows of some training sites that focus on power/speed, let me know.

PT test

What's your status ttlpkg?
How are you coming with that PT test prep?
You should be testing any day now.
Good Luck,

I'm doing pretty good duchess. My weight is down to about 207 and my running is going well. I have been doing a lot of PU/SU and am losing body fat little by little. I plan on taking a diagnostic PT test this week and the record test next week. Thanks for asking.

How is your training going? Have you found the power/speed solution you're looking for?

I am stating my goals here for all to see. Right now I weigh 210 and for my height, 6', the army want me to be sub 203.

My goals:

Wt: 200
Pushups: 85 (must be done in two minutes time)
Situps: 85 (2 minutes)
Two Mile Run: 14 minutes

Ok, I took my PT test this morning, and I did ok, yet didn't quite meet my perfomance goals. I met my physique goals though. :) Considering it was about 45 degrees and raining, I'll not complain too much.

Wt: 203
Pushups: 77
Situps: 71
Two Mile Run: 16:25 (My slowest ever)

I'll take another one in about 6 mos and get that run time way down!

Good job!!

Way to go ttlpkg!!
I know what you mean about not quite meeting your goals, been there done that. As far as my training is concrened, I'm focusing on a strength phase that includes both power and olympic lifting. I'll let you know in 6 weeks if there are any significant changes. I'll also be adding a few speed /agility drills as well as a bit of cardio. My goal at this point is to improve my strenght and athleticism in the off season so that I can work on skill stuff come March/April. Look for the Firfighter Combat Challenge on ESPN around Dec 22nd. You might catch me in the crowd. The team I coached placed respectably. Our female was 3rd, our >50 guy ran with the champ, and our chief all 280 lbs of him, finished in under 3 minutes. I'm as proud as any coach could be. I'll be competing next year and hope to win. We'll see.
