anyone here do front squats?

I saw this powerlifter doing front squats with this thing on his shoulders with two pegs that held the bar while he squatted. anyone else use this contraption? it looks like two U's or horseshoes, and maybe a bar in the back and/or front for stability that sit on your shoulders, with pegs that come out of the chest part to support the bar...

I do them. Learn the clean grip; it takes some flexibility for a novice, but it's well worth it. Soon you'll be complaining about bruises on the collarbone, but hey, I love my front squats.

Front squats are a decent builder for the legs, especially the front of the quads, but are in no way a substitute for regular heavy squats.

depends what you want to achieve from your training.

I do them because of my interest in the clean and jerk. but normally i would only do back squats.

what do you want from your training to justify using front squats?
i would even add them into body building training just to spice things up a bit........or tack them onto the end of back squats to nail the quads.

you dont need contraptions either. I have to use the clean and jerk grip that Belial mentioned (although the front delts should be stopping the bar touching your collarbone).........but you can also use different grips.(i cant remember what they are called but we call it cossack grip......cause you look like one of those dancers)

I started to do front squats after my gruesome sets of back squats just to spice up my routine. can you guys come up with descriptions or pictures of the different types of grips for the front dquats? back squats seem to just work the overall size, where as I would like to put on some size in the front of my thighs.

try yasso.net- go to 'animated exercises'

or ast-ss.com- training exercises

both shows pics descriptions...hope this helps some :)

They provide great benefits for the front quads, but I always have problems with my form. My torso always wants to lean forward too far. I prefer the standard back squat, because I can shift 200 percent more weight! I watched Ronnie Coleman perform a frontal squat with 585lbs on video. . . .it was unbelievable!! The scary thing was that it looked easy!

I do them to strengthen my core for squatting. I generally do about 243 for 3-4 sets of 8...arse to ankles. I feel like it helps the bottom part of my squat a great deal.
