Anyone do Deadlifts off the rack?

I really love these!! I usually set the safety rails slightly below knee level, so the movement is directed towards my back. I also use somewhat of a close stance and wrist straps, which I believe is more effective for this purpose. My personal best on these is 665lbs 1RM. When I do these I work with very heavy weight as I work with 585lbs for 7. Overall this exercise has strengthened my back tremendously for squats, barbell rows, t-bar rows, and shoulder presses. For a full-range of motion, I use stiff-leg deads as I mentioned in another thread. What do you guys think about deads off the rack?

Yeah i do them the help the lockout of my deadlifts.

I find that the accutal "groove" of the dead lift gets lost.

So instead i have added chains to the bar to help me accelerate through my sticking points

Don't like them too much but did pull 880 from 18" (well below my knees by 3-5") without straps and a loose belt a few weeks back. It is actually a strongman event.

I used to do them for the same reason......and agree with your conclusion about the groove. Also, when you get a decent amount of weight on the bar it gets easier to do reps because of the way the bar flexes. Your solution is interesting....I might try it.

I have started setting the bar at around 18 inches (as Bfold said), or 5 or so inches below my knees. I think it helps the groove situation. You should note that setting the bar at that position means you have to use a lot less weight.....it is a tough place to work from. So if anybody here thinks that Bfolds 880 isn't that impressive for a 300lbish guy......think again.

Imnotdutch: Thanks...a lot.

I've seen Willie Wessels do 1,000 for 2 reps from 18" before...at a bodyweight of 223!!!

i do these as a max effort exercise. i will go with the plates 4-8 inches off the ground if i'm pulling conventional. it sure does work the hell out of the lockout.

I dont do em cause the rack doesnt accomodate my sumo style (cant get my feet wide enough) I have my form down pat and dont want to screw with it.
