Another squat question

estropes

Ok I've done both and will probably continue, but can anyone tell me the difference between front (hold the barbell in front) and rear (having the bar behind you).

I mean the front is harder, I assume it's a balance thing but not 100% sure.

Thanks

I consider front squats in about the same category as reverse grip bench presses: pretty much a useless derivative of an otherwise excellent mass bulider.

I don't do them. If you're willing to go through the pain of squats, you might as well do the real thing where you can use real weight. Besides, regular squats aren't near as awkward or harsh on the shoulders. JMHO...

i actually like front squats... once you get the hang of them, and the balance thing down, well tend to really blast my quads more... i don't like the bruises they leave on my upper arms... but i'll toughen up eventually... i've actually been getting some separation in my upper quad and i really think front squats have helped bring that out...

i use front squats as an alternate squat warmup and to strengthen my core. i normally do mine before heavy back squats. maybe 185 for front, its not taxing on the legs but moreso on my lower back and midsection.

i agree with phemomena and bignate on this one, i do front squats, but regular squats will always be in my routine...you can handle more weight and they are just a better exercise.
Yes front squats are harder mainly due to the balance and, if you have never done them, you will be shocked how much less weight you have to use!

Front squats are great........they definately hit the front of your quads well but as WPH said you cant handle as much weight with front squats so make sure you do regular squats as well........your quads will soon pop out like that.

yup, definately NOT a replacement to regular squats, but i put them in my routine a few times a month for variety... now that i've gotten to used to the motion i'm actually starting to really like 'em... (i guess i'd better add a little more weight if i like 'em that much though :( hehe cause yeah, i don't go too heavy on 'em, they're probably like a vacation from the evil squats for my legs :) )
