Ah, the January gym crowd...

I didn't really see it much until last night since I usually go before or after the typical busy times. I forgot exactly how annoying it could be. I swear I saw 5 different people walking around with Muscle & Fitness mags, looking down thoughtfully at the "Get Big in 2 Months!!!" workout of the month after doing their exercise with extremely poor form. A glance up to the cardio room was funny. There was step class going on and the regulars were there doing fine. The room is usually maybe 1/3 full. Last night it was packed and 2/3 of the crowd was zigging when they should be zagging, flaining their arms, and bumping into each other and the regulars. It looked like some soccer moms were ready to throw down.

The exercises these people do. Old school calisthenics right in the middle of the DB area and its benches. Squat rack curls, power rack curls, curls using the becch press bars while straddling the bench (98% of which are all momentum), smith machine everythings, spastic cable things, fucking whatever. People asking you for a spot mid rep must really want to die, especially when they're doing flyes with 15's and struggling.

Fuck I'm glad it'll be over in a few weeks.

lol you are correct. I have seen more new faces in the past week than I have all year.lololl

I went last night and the sights in the locker room were kinda scary. Granted I am no Arnold, but these guys were nassy, plus the yunguns were walking around with their little books and atanding on the scales I swear all three of them together couldn't have weighed in at more than 200lbs.

The pool had women in it that make me look like an anorexic 4th grader.

The Personal Trainer was helping this guy and had him locking his knees every movement.

BM always gets an attitude during January.

I hated this time when I worked out
Thankfully this is no longer a problem

Yeah, my SO's a trainer and she hates the post New Year crowd. They swarm the gym at the peak training times and (improperly) use everything she wants to have her clients use. So, not only does her service suffer, she has to explain to people that don't pay her that they're idiots and are going to hurt themselves and to gtfo of the way.

so now you have to listen to her bitch about it too?

I have the ability to go the gym at pretty much whatever time of day I want and I DO tailor my workouts so that I can accompany my husband in the evening for our aquatic workouts

This is THE WORST time of year.

UGH...

I have been training in the same gym for 1 1/2 years and luckily (I guess because I nearly snarl when I walk in, snarl while I am training and snarl on the way out) nobody really talks to me.

I'm REALLY REALLY happy that my sorry Old Grump got his ass back to the gym. He needs to take better care of himself. Old bastard! I just got used to his sorry pasty white old man ass. He has high blood pressure AND his cholesterol is too high.

EVERYONE RAG ON HIS ASS PLEASE...

He is married to an ex-fitness professional with a fair amount of experience in many different aspects of health, fitness and wellness. You think that MAYBE he will listen to his wife?! Clearly I didn't marry him for money or for his looks... I want him to be around for longer than a minute.

What can I say, I am a bitch like that.

I work out in the early afternoon and my Gym is even now crowded at this time. Too many people are unemployeed and having nothing else to, go to the gym. Sucks!

Well, at least you admit it. Every think that he just raises his cholesterol to get away from you...via the coffin route?

C'mon. That was funny. I am making the funny face now.

same shit every year, they'll be gone by the ned of january, aren't more gym memberships not used than actually are.

women like snuggle bears :qt:

They aren't the only ones.

Dude.

Fucking seriously.

my gym is packed! its not just soccer Moms & unemployed high school grads anymore, we have this group of wanna-be olympic lifters that train in teams & hog up every squat rack/ dl platform. they spend more time chatting & high-five each other than training.

There's a group of older firefighters that do that at my gym. They take up both squat racks and do squats, hang cleans, and OHP for about 2 hours. Problem is, they only have 25's on the bars and there's anywhere from 4-7 of them all taking 5 minute breaks between sets. The dooshiz always bring an actual firetruck and park it sideways across a bunch of parking spots when they come. I just go to a different gym when I see it out there. There's a 24 hr Fitness every 5 miles here.

Home gym = Good

seriously, yesterday at 5:00 o'clock I pulled into the gym parking lot and saw fucking WAVES of people going from their cars to the door. I just kept on driving.

Back to the 6:00am workouts.

Our gym population has doubled. I used to park in the first row lunch and after work but now I am practically in another zip code. But at least i know that march is around the corner and I'll get my parking space back again until next January. LOL.

Man, I miss my home and university gyms.

I fear this public gym shit. Too bad there aren't more dungeon gyms around... it's always huge "fitness centers" and "athletic clubs". I just want a dark, cold gym with racks and weights, tires and stones; not pools and indoor soccer fields and spin rooms.

*sigh*

Take it easy there, animal pack.

Condo gym isn't too bad. The good thing is too if you find a real hottie that works out there you can guarantee you will see her sweating and really chat her up because you both live there.

Shush, fatty. :D

But seriously, I've always had a home gym. This transition will be difficult and mentally demanding. Finding real "gyms" is difficult, and often one simply doesn't exist within acceptable driving distance. *cry*

Both 24 Hr and Gold's are fine near me. The 24 Hr I go to has everything I need and doesn't have that "health club" feel the way places with tennis courts and the like do. The Gold's here usually have the freeweights in a completely separate area from the cardio equipment and the machines, which I like. I stopped going there because it was always full of 18 year old on dbol cycles bouncing weights off their chests and then flexing in the mirrors.

Yes, it WAS funny... LOL it is his blood pressure that will kill him first. Whenever we get into an arguement he always says, "I know you are TRYING to kill me, aren't you?!"

Last Gold's I went to near Boston didn't even have a single power rack. It was weird. Most of 'em don't allow chalk, either, let alone bands, boards or chains.

Gym culture is strange.

I can't remember the last time I'd been to a gym that DID allow that sorta stuff. :(

The Gold's I used to go to bought out a gym that was just a local company. It had a huge freeweight area and probably had 4 power racks. It had a room strictly for deadlifting with the oly plates. I fucking loved that place. My first source was the owner. Then he sold to Gold's and they splashed bright paint everywhere and totally rearranged everything. The freeweight area was still decent, but the clientelle was shit. So I joined 24 hr when my membership expired. I also had to fucking go looking for joose online after that fuckbag sold because he moved.

in college it was real bad about two weeks before spring break
obviously the ez curl bar and benches had lines to them, and the squat rack was usually left unmolested

Id have to say the best thing i've seen so far is doing deadlifts inside the power rack..... Still cant figure that one out for the life of me.

Awesome. First day going to the gym here and I get robbed for $250.

I fucking hate public gyms.

:unhappycow:

I canceled my gym membership today. I was getting ripped off anyway. I had been paying $40/month for 3 years then I got a notice saying they were raising it to $43.25/month for cost reasons. Meanwhile on their website they're offering new members all club access for $29.99/month.

I did that today. It's a PLing move, called pin pulls or rack pulls. Pretty common and a great core/lower back/hams exercise that really helps build grip strength.

PLers don't actually DL to train for the DL. Kinda complicated.

:cow:

Why would you have $250 on your person while going to the gym? Not being a playa I rarely ever have more than $50 in my wallet and usually on $20.

Why you would take 250 beans into the gym and not leave it in your car is assanine. But we all do foolish things sooner or later, me totally included.

Not all mine, and I don't have a car here. On a trip/vacation. Didn't bring locks with me, so I just left clothes in locker. I know it's my fault, but the speed of the vultures was more impressive than originally thought.

Gym parking lots are notorious for theft. Thieves know that people leave their valuables in their cars when working out, and that they have a good hour to get the job done. It sucks when your shit gets taken. Lesson learned I hope.
