Wrist Straps -- how they can increase your lifts...

Ok, today I decided to use wrist straps... On dumbbell rows, I only used it for the left side, because of my wrist injury, I couldn't grip it otherwise...

I could do about 5 more reps on my left side than the right with 110's so I figured, what the hell??? I'll try it on the right too.

I got up to the 140's with the wrist straps and did 4 reps on each side... really felt it in my back, but the grip on it was all wrist strap past the first rep on my right.... my left, well, it was just hanging on the strap, as I have no grip now.

Now, I moved on to barbell bent over rows... I had to use the wrist straps as well... because.. well, my left arm would be worthless... well today I did a personal best of 335 on bent over rows for 5 reps... I was quite astounded how much the wraps brought up my lift... I mean hell, I tihnk I could only do like 265 before.

That was about all... I mean, I used them with low rows (left hand only) and lat pulldowns, but same weight...

Ahh well, once my wrist heals, the is the last I'll use them.

Are these around the wrist and wraped around the barbell/db, or just wrist wraps?

I had a wrist WRAP on my left wrist... and used a wrist STRAP on the bar (goes around wrist on bar)

I'd never use these things, but the alternative is not working out... and THAT isn't an option.

i use straps on almost all my back exercises when i get to my working sets. You'll often here me sing their praises. I think they are great for getting the most out of your back work.

Is there a stigma attached to using them?

Just that it will prevent your grip from increasing. Which, I found to be true for me. I started to use them, but decided against it. It took a while, and some additional grip work, but my back fails now well before my grip does for deads.

The only thing I use straps for is power shrugs. I can lift the weight fine, but can't "catch it" at the end of the movement.

But, to each their own.:)

I'm lucky, never used them so I never needed them. Now the rest of my body tires out long before my grip, it's also helped build some big ass forearms without doing much direct work for them

Never needed them either I didn't think... but when my lift on barbell rows goes up 70lbs because of them... I have to wonder if it was my grip holding me back.

I'm kinda forced into using them now... as I can't even workout with my wrist until it heals, without them.

After your wrist heals, burn the straps and buy a block of chalk bro. For me, its 10X better than straps.

Well, I'll probably give them to my roommate... no sense in burning the 8 bucks I spent on them.

Yeah, I dont plan on using them longer than it takes a hyperextended ligament to heal.

Personally, I always use straps for deadlifts. Once I get over about 405 it is virtually impossible for me to hold onto the bar for reps. At this point I really don't want my forearms any bigger, because my biceps are my worst bodypart, and I feel that my forarms will detract from them. Also I have tiny wrists, and they are alway sore after my heavy lifts. This morning during my back/chest/shoulder workout I had to use strap for my deadlifts. My final set was with #635, and the straps allowed me to retain some grip strength for the rest of my workout, since I always start with deadlifts.
