Women, I need some help!!

I'm trying to put together a supplement plan for my Mother and Sister, who are both over weight. I'm not bring in and clen, t-3, or DNP...Yet!

A little background: Mother is 58 and a smoker, but wants to turn over a new leaf and get things going good. My Sister is 39 and is a lot more over weight than my Mother. She used to be an all-state tennis champ and after her baby 5 years ago, has let everything go. She keeps spending money on books and seminars and I just said STOP spending money on these stupid diets and books.

I have advised that the most important thing is diet and that has already been gone over. I also have told them to get in a nice 30 minute walk in first thing in the morning before breakfast. Also I have advised them on a few supplements to help:

I went with these to start;

1 NYC, 3 times a day

100mg of r-ALA 3 times a day for better glucose metabolism. The better carb metabolism the better chance of using fat as food.

2000mg CLA 3 times a day. I have been reading some really good abstracts showing at doses of 5 grams and above, the results are solid.

100mg 5-htp 3 times a day. Besides increasing mood, 5-htp has been effective in decreasing carb cravings

Also advised them to increase meals to 4-5 and supplement 2 with a 25gram, no carb protien shakes. And no carbs after 6pm.

I have thought about Colius For, Guggle, etc.

Again, besides diet or training advice, is there any OTC suppls that have worked well for the Women here that I'm leaving out??

Thanks for the help!!

Good advice, but these women are ones who say, " well it cant be that easy." Also, I know they will stay from their diet, so they will need help. I think I'm going to leave out the 5-htp right now and just do a NYC/r-ALA/CLA stack for 30 days and see if I can get 10lbs off. I think they should be able to do that with diet and exercise alone.

Keep it coming girls!

My Suggestion...

I would say put them on Bill Phillip's body for life! Its the best diet/ training plan especially for people who dont know much about health and fitness. Its fun and it works too.

You dont even have to buy the book and you dont have to use their supplements (unless of course you want them to enter the challenge) but seriously take a look at it its great...

They bought the body for life, but all the info in his book is common sense. I truely understand the fundamentals of fat lose in a diet sense. I really just wanted to know what supps worked well for the women here.

No pre-existing conditions in either.

Just remember that the metabolic speed of your sister may not be the same for your mom due to age... consider it for their diets and supps.

Remember to include multivitamin, vit E and vit C.

Your Mom sounds like my Mom - looking for a magic pill. I would use fat burners as a last resort, not a starting point. If they really want to lose weight and keep it off, fat burners aren't the solution; diet and lifestyle modifications are.

Have them check out this website: http://www.hussman.org/fitness/index.htm

If you are dead set on giving them thermos maybe you should put them on a ephedra free thermo. If they are overweight, just cleaning up their diets and adding exercise will cause them to loose weight. Save all that other stuff for when they reach a plateau(sp).

You said they already looked at the BFL book. It is mostly common sense, but if it was that easy, then we'd have no obesity in the world. Most people just want to eat "normally" and lose some weight, but dont' want their lifestyles affected or have to count calories. So as the saying goes, you can lead a horse to water ....

I'm with spatts on this one -- keep it simple. They probably have to start by just overcoming some of the myths of dieting. Look for the biggest holes in their diets & lifestyles -- do they eat at least 3 times /day? Do they eat junk at night? Do they LOVE pasta? Start w/ just cleaning out the crap, move the meal count up to 5-6 or at least call it 3 meals & 2 snacks, and get them comfortable w/ the idea of regularly going to the gym. It is totally reasonable to plan on losing 10 lbs in a month, but the actual execution of that plan is a day-to-day struggle if you dont' believe in the plan, dont' want to do or just don't care. From your activity on this board, I KNOW you believe, you care & you are committed. Just getting that far is half the battle. See what basics you can adjust first, challenge them to do it for a week & see if they feel any better. They arent' goign to see huge amounts of fat drop off, but they might see some water weight go, they might feel a little more energized or more interested in exploring some diet changes. Then tell them it takes about 3 weeks to establish a pattern or a habit - challenge them to follow the improvements for 3 weeks & see how that works. Baby steps! TRUST me - I struggle w/ this sort of thing on a daily basis and I've done bb competitions, I believe, I care and I'm "usually" committed -- but sometimes food becomes a wonderful emotional crutch for me when there's no one else to turn to. Not good, I recognize it, but then I get back on track.

Good luck!

I agree with what everyone else said. Ask them to make one small change in their lifestyle habits each week. Giving them pills is more likely to give them a false sense of security and send the message that the pills will do some of the work. Not true. I also would not give anyone NYC without a full medical first. The only way either of them will lose AND keep the weight off IS by making those lifestyle changes. The only supp I would suggest at this stage is the ALA since neither of them are doing much exercise and they may be partly insulin resistant. But be sure they understand that the ALA is NOT a fatloss pill, it's just there to stabilize/reduce their blood sugar so that they can lose fat more easily once they get their lifestyle changes underway. They must understand that fatloss and fitness come from a good diet and exercise and NOTHING ELSE. Honestly I don't even use most of theose supps until my last 4-6 weeks of precompetition dieting when my fatloss is slowing and I'm already very lean. Overweight people need to do very little to lose a lot of fat other than eat less and exercise more.
