Why am I such a fucking bailer on the compound exercises?

I'm trying to get back into my routine after a month break, whenever I start a set of squats or deadlifts I can never make it to the 20 rep mark, and I usually quit the entire workout after a few sets of these. I just cannot deal with the physical intensity of these excersises. Have any of you guys had problems with determination/grit? I desparately need to get this sorted, as its literally sending me insane... just wondered if anyone has experienced anything similar and if so how did you get around it? Replies much appreciated!

Do you mean 20 reps on 1 set, thats insane. I deadlift mid 400s for 5's but if I tried to do 20 reps I'd never get past a plate aside. Just my opinion but you'll get the most mass from compound exercises in the 5-8 rep range. Plus you become so exhausted doing that many reps that your form suffers easily and you put yourself at risk for injury.

never done 20 rep deads before.

with 20 rep squats you just gotta pace yourself and after the first 14 or so, take some deep breaths and keep plugging away.

it all comes down to how much you want it.

The mann said:
they're right, why are you doing so many reps?that's a lot of reps even for a warmup

20 rep squats are the most brutal and most productive exercise there is!

I have done 20 reps sets...and sets of 10 on squats and deads.

Try this...

Deads...6 sets of 10 reps with 60 sec rest between sets. Talk about hurting...and puking.

Think 20 is tough on squats! I was doing a workout a while back (before the mann changed my evil ways and got me on Westside)
5x3 speed sets
2x5 power sets
1x20
then to burn it out 1x50 best form of cardio there is!!!!!!!!
talk about a pump, holy shit were my legs tight!

Oh yea thanks Mann for getting me outta that crazy shit!

Okay, 20 rep deads, no way. Deads should be done Heavy and low reps.

Now squats are different. 20 rep squats rule, but take a lot of guts and determination to do them. But to do them try this.

Start off with just the bar and do 20 reps. No problem.

Start adding weight, and do it slow. The key here is not to worry about what people think of you. "Oh look at little sissy boy can only squat 25's". Fuck 'em it's not about them it's about YOU.

So, at 25 a side, do another set of 20..So how did it go? If good up it to 45's and then add 10's. But the key is to do it slow. Don't try and do 225 right out of the gate. It takes time to work your way up. It is also okay to pause for 5 -10 seconds to catch you breath, they are a part cardio exercise too.

Now for fun try, Breathing Squats. Do a search. they are 50 rep squats. 20 are easy after doing those.

I do them almost every week. I prefer doing a lighter weight for 20, tha a heavy weight for 8. Easier on the back, knees etc. But I'm an old guy (41) so have to watch these things. But I found as I went heavier 315 and up, I was cheating, not going to the floor, breaking form etc. Try them, your legs will hate you.

P.S. - As with all squatting "Ass-2-The-Floor" or not at all
