When doing deadlifts....

Does it make much of a difference if you hold your hands a little closer together? Putting the bar down with my fingers on the grip just fuckin rips the ends of my fingers apart... burns sooo bad. Putting my hands on the smooth part of the bar doesn't hurt nearly as bad...
Or do you think i should buy myself a pair of gloves that cover my hands and fingers?
Thanks
Ryan

Find out what is comfortable for you. I know when I use a close grip on deads, my pectorals will cramp. As for your grip, if you are not using straps. . . find some chalk. If your hands are turning into hamburger. . . it may be a good idea to buy some gloves.

Gloves are a crutch and will weaken you grip.

Tough it out for a few weeks and you'll get used to it.

I have to disagree with that statement. Although I know they are not popular here, I don't agree that they will weaken ones grip. You may not get the calloused hands that poeple without gloves have, but you still need to hold the bar. Gloves don't enable you to hold more, they just help with a little comfort.

I agree with Zulu on this one. You will regret developing a dependance on gloves when you start hitting serious weights. Also, the smooth part of the bar is smooth for a reason. When you get into heavy weights, you need the grip of the bar.

On the other hand, you can't always just tough it out. Try to find a good median. Use gloves only when you absolutely have to.

I don't wear gloves when I train. How does wearing gloves weaken your grip? Gloves provide protection for people who have sensitive skin. If you are not using wrist straps. . . .there is no reason why you will lose gripping strength. This whole glove debate is ridiculous.

When I pull heavy weights, I look for a bar with very rough knurling on it. The roughness allows for a better grip...

Also...use the closest grip that you can. Your hands want to maybe brush your legs as you go up...the narrower your grip...the longer the reach you have.

Thanks for all the tips guys...
Deads are only hurting the tips of my fingers... it feels like I ran my hand over a really fine cheese grater... and that is only when I put the weight down. No other excersices have ever bothered my hands before... Is it even possible to get calluses on your finger prints?
Thanks
Ryan

I don't get it. I've never had a problem with the tips of my fingers. Its always the fleshy part of the palm below the fingers.
I like a good spiky knurling too. You need some penetration of the epidermis to get a solid grip. Not sure what you're doing to yourself amigo.
