What kind of gloves do you use...

All joking aside, I am thinking about wearing some form of
leg warmer. My left patallar tendon is bothering me and
a warmer of wrap would probably help when doing squat/DL
workouts.

No leg/shin warmers? Lots of strongmen wear them to keep their calves warm as well as to help with their shin splints. :(

B True

Yeah but they weigh 280+ and roll cars, throw around rocks weighing 400+ etc for a living. I think we can forgive their excentricities (sp) :).

For those who go to gyms that don't allow chalk.....can a packet of TUMS. They work great as a substitute and all of the pretty colours really enhance those sparkly things you see after a heavy set.

If Svend wants to wear them, I guess I can go for that. But I am still going to snicker about them. . . when I am very sure he has left the area.

I too will snicker..........from a safe distance.

Strong Island,

I am in no way trying to pick a fight with you, and I have actually had some giggles from this thread, but. . . there definately is a correlation between not wearing gloves and toughness.

Knurled steel biting into my hand hurts. If I wore gloves, it would hurt less, but I would have hands like a prison yard bitch. . . Not happenin.

Also, gloves are not allowed in competition. I remember when I was young and thought I would grow up and become Mr Oklahoma, and I wore Rafael Daniels fingerless gloves when I lifted. When I went off to college and trained with some real genuinely tough and strong guys who lauged at people who wore gloves and leg warmers, then I threw them away, and I discovered that knurled bars hurt.

A bench bar with 300 lbs on it felt like it would crush my hands. Now I hardly notice it as I pass it warming up. I shook hands with a 600 plus bencher Saturday, and I can tell you from the sandpaper like surface, his hands have not been covered with a glove while lifting in some years.

Sure it is a matter of personal opinion. But walk into Westside Barbell Club, or the L.A. Lifting Club, or the House of Pain, or my Dungeon with some gloves on, and you will definately get some funny looks from guys who are there to TRAIN.

Don't use gloves, and don't use straps, and you will be better off in the long run.

Bro..this thread is funny. And it is educational to see your point of view. I guess some people do associate callusses with tuffness.

My opinion is it is just perceived toughness. Real toughness is in the heart and not on the hands. But I respect everyone on this post because we all spend hours every week in the gym striving to better ourselves.

But I also never look at someones hands...I look at their physique and their work ethic. If they wear gloves or don't...I don't care. I want 20 inch arms and a 50 inch chest....don't really care if I have calluses.

But many gyms like Westside, Dungeon etc. have their own culture and part of that culture is NO GLOVES. I respect that and see where you are coming from.

My gym doesn't allow chalk and if I am pressing or if I am shrugging heavy dumbells they slide in my hands without gloves, since I sweat alot...so gloves help grip the weigth better for me personally. But when I bench I do not wear them.

Don't you love how most posts on Elite get way off topic and cause a long debate.

Peace
SI

1. I used to be a lumberjack.....I and others would work at low temperatures in nothing but jeans and T-shirts. The harder you work the warmer you get. Having said that, when it was time for a break several layers of clothing went on. I was responding to your analogy......

2. And he thinks he needs gloves beacuse he has soft hands. This isn't strictly true.

3. Yes.....but quite entertaining watching people get all upset about such a simple thing :)

4. I wont even dignify that with a decent answer. Why do you have to resort to sarcasm?

5. Surely the correlation between the thickness of skin on your hands and the punishment that your hands will take exists? Or do you mean 'tough' as in being a double-hard bastard? If you mean the latter you are using it in a different context to most people in this thread.

1. Forget gloves...lumberjacks are tough!

2. The first post was asking for a good brand.

3. I guess so.

4. OK

5. I think you need to read the thread over. Of course working without weights toughens the skin of the hands. Why would we argue that point??

I am glad you see what I was getting at. And in my world, a pair of lifting gloves is looked at in an entirely different way than it would be at a gym that does not allow chalk.

In my Dungeon, chalk, sweat, cursing and bench shirts are mandatory. Different strokes for different folks.

And I too would like a 50 inch chest and 20 inch arms. I am sporting 48 and 18 right now. Sadly I think 2 more inches on the chest will be easier to obtain than 2 inches on the arms. I would rather, though, have a 600 bench. I would not care if my arms and chest went down if it meant I put another 75 lbs on my bench. Once again, different strokes for different folks.

I have a set of gloves, but as of the past five or so months have stopped using em. For serious pull days I use a pair of straps, and that cuts down on the ridiculous callouses, but chalk is well worth it, that stuff makes me feel like a monster- it pumps me up better than ACDC and Crank. Leave the gloves at home- the computer doesn't care.

This leads us to another debate...straps. I used them for years but have stopped a few months ago....and I wished I never used them. My grip strength has caught up to all of my exercises. I shrug, row, pull and do deadlifts without them with no problem. Not using gloves doesn't make your muscles any stronger but, not using straps does. Big difference. Satan try to ween your way off of them...you'll be happy you did. But thats just my opinion.
