Mother may be charged with manslaughter after botched abortion attempt

LAWRENCE, Mass. -- A teenage mother-to-be illegally tries to abort her baby while in her second-trimester of her pregnancy.

Police say Amber Abreu, 18, over a two-day period took three misoprostol pills, which are used to prevent ulcers, but are also a component found in the abortion pill, RU-486.

In the United State, taking misoprostol alone for an abortion is prohibited by law.

Yet Abreu arrived at Lawrence General Hospital on Jan. 6, experiencing pain her abdomen. She was in her 23rd to 25th week of pregnancy.

Baby Ashley arrived shortly thereafter around 6 p.m., weighing only one and a quarter pounds. Only three hours after giving birth, Abreu had left the hospital against the advice of her medical staff, while her little girl was transported to Tufts New England Medical Center in urgent need of special treatment.

Ashley survived for only four days, during which Abreu visited her daughter once and spent the night.

After hearing about the baby's death from a social worker, police arrested Abreu on Tuesday on charges of "procuring miscarriage."

She was arraigned before a judge in Lawrence District Court on Wednesday and is now being held on $15,000 bail.

Police say that because Abreu's baby was actually born, the mother could face manslaughter charges when the autopsy results are revealed. Misoprostol was found in the baby's urine, according to authorities.

Abreu admitted to police that upon first feeling the baby's movements, she acquired tablets, which did not come with instructions, from a friend visiting the Dominican Republic.

Abortions in Massachusetts are legal until the 24th week of pregnancy.

I'm gonna get flamed for this.

Keep the law of her body.

Even if I don't agree with what she did.

A manslaughter charge is ridiculous.

I am curious as to what prompted them to do an autopsy.

Interesting approach with th chemical knowledge - others will try this now since it's in print.

Overall I agree with bOund.

i don't really care about other peoples fetuses. babies are high maintainence. now unleash the christian breeding machines....

Well I can see that it is her body but that was a baby that was born at 1 lb..Not a little sperm. Maybe if she had miscarried instead of delivering the baby things would be different for her. If she did not want the baby why not go to a clinic or some thing, it was right around the time that abortions can be done.Only like 1 week earlier or whatever...
I think that they did the autopsy because she admitted to taking ulcer meds to kill the baby.

She probably either could not afford it or there may have been a law that her parents had to sign to allow the abortion.

I think those charges are pretty trumped up when she did it within the time frame in which abortion is legal in her state anyway. I think the charges will be very much reduced upon plea bargaining.

On a side note, 24 weeks? Damn that is LATE to allow an abortion. I never really looked much into abortion laws but always assumed that you could only do it up to 12 weeks or so. By 24 weeks, you are well into feeling the baby move and showing and everything. That is probably too late. By that time, the baby probably has developed enough of a central nervous system that it feels pain, etc. Just seems wrong to me. I certainly am not one of those pro-lifers. I just think maybe they should push that back to about 12 weeks or so.

Also, believe me people, this case is probably being pursued for political reasons. Probably a prosecutor with a hard on to get a big name. If that is a case, I take back what I said about plea bargaining. Prosecutor may be in tight with people who want to see this case go all the way up to the Supreme Court in order to at least partially overturn Roe v. Wade.
