Mother may be charged with manslaughter after botched abortion attempt
LAWRENCE, Mass. -- A teenage mother-to-be illegally tries to abort her baby while in her second-trimester of her pregnancy.
Police say Amber Abreu, 18, over a two-day period took three misoprostol pills, which are used to prevent ulcers, but are also a component found in the abortion pill, RU-486.
In the United State, taking misoprostol alone for an abortion is prohibited by law.
Yet Abreu arrived at Lawrence General Hospital on Jan. 6, experiencing pain her abdomen. She was in her 23rd to 25th week of pregnancy.
Baby Ashley arrived shortly thereafter around 6 p.m., weighing only one and a quarter pounds. Only three hours after giving birth, Abreu had left the hospital against the advice of her medical staff, while her little girl was transported to Tufts New England Medical Center in urgent need of special treatment.
Ashley survived for only four days, during which Abreu visited her daughter once and spent the night.
After hearing about the baby's death from a social worker, police arrested Abreu on Tuesday on charges of "procuring miscarriage."
She was arraigned before a judge in Lawrence District Court on Wednesday and is now being held on $15,000 bail.
Police say that because Abreu's baby was actually born, the mother could face manslaughter charges when the autopsy results are revealed. Misoprostol was found in the baby's urine, according to authorities.
Abreu admitted to police that upon first feeling the baby's movements, she acquired tablets, which did not come with instructions, from a friend visiting the Dominican Republic.
Abortions in Massachusetts are legal until the 24th week of pregnancy.
