For fun, that is...not study books.

Now I am going through the Sookie Stackhouse novels - the True Blood series books. I needed something to let my brain not work for a change.

Then I want to see those Dresden Files series.

I just finished "God and his Demons". It was good if you have some background or knowledge of christianity; kind of necessary otherwise I think it would be torture to read it. Need to go to barnes and noble or the library later to pick up another read. It's been a while since I have read any fiction.

hhmmmmm.....Is it one of those that are trying to "enforce" Christianity or something else? It sounds interesting, even though I have stopped reading books that focus on unveiling the religion ;)

The outliers... Gladwell.
Tipping Point Guru, he fuses social psychology to reveal that genius and success, are not based on the crude explations of the sole narrative of hard work and perseverance. Timing, Cultural Needs, and the Network that supported the growth of that person.
For example 90% of professional hockey players are born in January, February, and March. Strange Patterns, like a 9 year stretch of births that contain the richest people in America. How cultural farming work ethics in the Qing dynasty helps explain why the Chinese excel in Math, and why the US students lag behind... fucking awesome book.
That, and the midamerican Truckdriver Singles Guide... j/k.

No definetly not trying to "enforce" Christianity...more of a book that looks at it as it is and slams the hell out of it. Similar to "Why religion poisons everything" except it focuses solely on christianity throughout time.

So maybe not your cup of tea.

Haven't read a "fun" book in a while. Currently reading "Art of the Start", as I just started my own little biz.

Im reading the Partnership; the making of Goldman Sachs

Pretty interesting stuff.... that company has come up from absoluel financial death to be the leading institutional investment bank on the planet

Killah, the book BUY ME (from I forgot who) helped me plant ideas how to run my business when I started it....I dont know what kind of business you started, but you can check it out.

Wulfgar, I love reading about the path of successful people, gives me inspiration and motivation...good thing :-)

Ariel, that book sounds just like something I would totally eat up! I gotta check it out!

Cuthroat, its still interesting book....its just that most of the time when I read books like that, I just get irritated (not that I take the Christianity's side)

RW, babes....is it action packed or would one have to skip 5 pages of descriptions and stuff? lol

I'm also reading his new book 'What the Dog Saw', a collection of his articles from the New York Times.

The part I'm reading now, is an exploration of the Dog Whisperer, and his unorthodox, narrative, but mainly the part I'm learning about right now... I've seen like some episodes, with Thandie, and was like... this is the most persuasive example I have seen of how one can use pure intentions to relate to people. He criticizes people and instead of hunching up their shoulders, they relax their shoulders and just listen. Most peeps, when criticized by a stranger will atleast tense up, and even get defensive. Hell, in his presence, I notice an openness with people...uncanny.

Apparently dude did not have jedi/yogic skills at pacifying, or human nature, his wife recalls dude was a complete asshole their first 2 years, he believed wives exist to make their husbands happy...

A complete turnaround of the dude U see on TV. I'm wondering and have not got to see where he switched his alpha male wolf mentality to having a secret 'completeness' that pervades his encounters with people, that I see on TV.

I have been following his show for a long time....I had 2 male pit bulls and from him I learned how to be with those and control them only with my intentions and mind. It is completely possible to do the same with people too.

I have noticed a lot of Buddha statues in his "dog hotel" and I have noticed his jewelery too - crystals and stuff. The way he talks it seems that he tapped into something, because he understands the power of thought and intention.

I also wonder now what was his turning point.

The part I last read, was explaining how he walked up from mexico, damn near dead and dehydrated on a 102 mile journey with 2 wolves... he then started a dog psychology business in Texas or was it Cali, don't remember. He meets his wife, and then the ruckus starts. U get the feel he was all alpha dominance, and totally unrefined, a mixture of uncanny, I've got it attitude, cause when U got skills like that, and you are a builder, it's gonna happen. However, that's the part I stopped at. I'll pick it up again when I have time.

It's all in Gladwell's What the Dog Saw.

Just checked it out on Amazon....when I order books in a little bit, I am getting this one :)

Patient Zero. Kind of a sci-fi/zombie/action book.

Awesome, will check that out!

Have a gander at Scott Sigler's first novel series (Infected / Contagious) if you like the sci-fi / zombie / action stuff.

Ken Burns "The War" was a fucking fantastic documentary. I'm gonna check this out.

You won't regret it bro; only read less than a hundred pages of it so far myself but a very honest & visceral account of his experiences at that time.

LOL U rawk.

Okay, when U have time U gotta check out this clip.
He explains like that people think they know what they want, but in reality have no fucking clue?
For example, do we even know what 'bold' coffee tastes like? What the hell is 'bold'?

I just picked up Andre Agassi's bio "Open" yesterday- have just flipped through it so far to see if i like the writing style, but have not begun to read it yet...looks really interesting.

I don't dig on Tennis. However, one of my favorite athletes.

Dude had spent 10,000 hours on the court by 18 years old. 10,000 is the usual number in hours it takes for 'genius' mastery.
I would be curious to read how his ups, getting bored, then downs, then rejuvenation redemption story.

Also, curious bout the controversial confession of amp'n up before matches.

I am reading Muscular Development MAGAZINE.

also in the middle of reading "Otherwise" by Farley Mowat, he's such an amazing writer, speaking of a connection with animals.

update:
that was a really good book.
a compelling story

Twilight Eclipse :biggrin::rainbow:

I read the first book....gotta admit its better than watching the movie, but I am more of Ann Rice vampire person :-)

The hell's the difference? Not everybody got stuck at Dr. Seuss-level and has to differentiate between "books" and "BOOKS".

:cow:

hahahaa...shut up! I am guilty of reading too many study books and I need something sometimes to make my brain not work.

Now spill, what are you reading lately?

Finishing up Modern Portfolio Theory and Investment Analysis by Elton et al. and Sharpe's Investments (looking for moar portfolio theory texts and accounting/econ recommendations if anyone has any); Historical Studies in the Language of Chemistry by Crosland; Feynman's The Meaning of it All.

I've been meaning to get an Amazon order off for a couple months now. It takes a while to sort through everything to find the right material.

Sh!t my Dad Says

Downloaded it last night. Freaking hilarious. I highly recommend.

I'll check that out.
I read a LOT, and i'm currently reading some stupid mystery that I won't finish because it's for idiots.

I read a lot of Marketing mags and gardening/health books, but I need some GOOD fiction.
not sci-fi, and no vampires.

oh, ughhhh......it does take a long time...when I am searching, I dont want to buy a book that would repeat the same from some other one that I read. I get headaches when I try to decide what to get.

I a m looking into "The Golden Bough" by Sir Frazer, which can get dull and boring at times. Its a compilation of rituals, beliefs and magical practices from the world.....when I think I need a break, I grab something easier to read

I am reading Hellraisers by Robert Sellers (The life and inebriated times of Richard Burton, Richard Harris, Peter O'Toole and Oliver Reed)

Then I will read The Terror By Dan Simmons

Chase Daniel's got a SuperBowl Ring...

Good to See U, JDD.

The thing bout Agassi, that was controversial in that book, apparently in early 90's when he got fat, and was tanking matches, he used to take crystal meth before matches...

Not so, he was doing it in his free time-not as a performance enhancer.
He tested positive, but told them he "accidentally drank some in his friend's soda"- which was bullshit, he was snorting/smoking it with his friend
The governing body said because it was recreational, all he had to do was take a very short suspension-three months.

Andre Agassi book says he used crystal meth - ESPN

In other news I am about to read "Dear John" because I heard the movie sucks so I thought I'd read the book. I've only read The Notebook by Sparks before, but looking forward to some more sentimental reading.

Not counting study books? Then it's sad I don't read much for fun these days- no time. Doesn't count but reading about perimenopause. Ass right! Da change b4 da change. Not there yet, but it runs early in my family and may explain why I just can't take s**t that well sometimes. For fun- I want to pickup some Calvin and Hobbes- the best philosophical writing ever.

I love it. Yup.

Resilience, and surmounting the odds through overcoming the what seems to be the inevitable, with the hope of freedom, is a big thing for the Trex.

That said, good to see ya Trexsta.

Yup you nailed it.
People are incredibly strong, and resilient when placed in difficult situations. I find that really inspiring, and it it helps me to overcome mental weakness.
Good to see you too!!:)

Finished Papillon-was really good.

Now I'm reading Ishmael by Daniel Quinn
and have a hold at the library on a book by Elizabeth Badinter- Mother Love-Myth and Reality : Motherhood in Modern History.

Ishmael is pretty good, but I'm not really buying into the idea of New Tribalism. Don't see it happening. But the book is interesting anyway.
