Can someone tell me why I can bench 265 on the hammer bench and only 225 with a barbell? Is it easier on hammer machines because you don't use the stabilizer muscles?

How are you counting the weight ie. 225 on the barbell is 4-45s+ the bar. Hammer Strength equipment is lighter then the bar where you load the plates. If you use this equipment often your stablizer muscles will feel different. I use this euipment alot..it was designed for hitting the specific muscle being worked. I feel the chest equipment hits the pecs like no bench could.( Fuck I sound like I own stock in the company )As far as I'm concerned if I was to own any equipment besides free weights the only way to go is HS.

Yeah I am counting the weight of the barbell as 45 pounds and counting the weight of the hammer arms as 5 pounds total.

I would've thought you could lift MORE if you have other muscle groups working....

I thought it was because you're not lifting the weight directly against gravity.... you have a pivot point. Like leverage.... it's always easier to lift something if it's attached to a pulley, than to lift it directly up. The more pulleys, the easier it is....

.... that's what I thought.

Hammer Strength machines do not have pulleys. It may seem that way about using more muscles = more poundage it isnt the case because your body has to use so much more energy just trying to stablize the weight whereas w/ the machine it is a concentrated driving motion. And the fact that stabelizer muscles are reduced is the same reason why most people can lift more on BB bench then on DB bench, and can lift more on Hammer then on BB Bench. Gravity may also play a role but I think the case with most machines is you can lift more because it reduces the role that stabiliztion plays which in turn lets you concentrate more enegy and force into the press.

i wish we had flat hammer strength bench machine with free weights at my gym... i like most of their equipment... i think it's because you are not worrying about for to be honest... i can bench more if use a smith machine too.
