Use of Protein Shakes When Losing Weight

I have a difficult time getting sufficient protein in my diet for a variety of reason. I am trying to lose some weight and have just started to use GAC's Heat Miser to help out, but I know I need to fix my diet as well.

My question is, would it be a good idea to use a protein shake as a meal replacement for breakfast and/or lunch in order to increase protein and ensure that fats and carb intake is low for these meals? Specifically, I was thinking of using George's Triple Threat for the protein shake since I have heard it tastes pretty good, it is on sale right now, and I am sure George will send me a ton of Karma for plugging the product and buying it!

I know that it is better to try to get the protein from real food, but since I can never get enough that way does it souund like a good idea to use the protein shakes as a meal relacement when trying to lose weight?

Thanks.

you're right about it being best to get protein from real food but it's a very good way to get protein through shakes. I'd suggest one shake for breakfast and one after your workout (or cardio session). If you have access to a slower digesting protein like caesien (I'm not sure if that's spelled right) then you should drink that before bedtime. So you should probably drink about 3 shakes a day. You could probably squeeze four in there if you have a really busy schedule, but I wouldn't exceed that amount....unless you have some sort of essential amino acid supplement.

Thanks Big Mac.

The only problem I see with going to 3 shakes a day would be calories. At about 350 calories per shake they add up quickly.

Any other thoughts?

your 1st meal of the day should be real food-this is very important because the body has been in a catabolic state all nite and you need to eat quickly to get out of it. Shakes are for emergency situations when time is short

I don't know if triple threat is in pre-measured packets or not, but either way, you could simply use less per serving, if 350 kcals is too much for you at one time. But, if you think about it, 350 x six meals =2100 kcals, which isn't all that much. You just have to make sure your real meals are also only 350 kcals, which is a lot harder to do. That's why I do better with shakes--for me, it is harder to start eating and then have to eat such a little amount, than it is to just not eat at all, and just drink a shake.

protein shakes are always a good addition to your diet ,and since you will be eating every 2 hours5-6 times a day,3 of them can be shakes ......makes it easier............

I prefer to use straight protein powder and add carbs from whole food sources, old fashioned oatmeal being my favorite. I think the maltodextrin in most MRP's is too high on the glycemic index and oatmeal is way cheap and adds good fats and fiber. I even blend uncooked oatmeal into my shake on occasion. One cup uncooked old fashioned oats has 10g p 54g c(8g fiber) and 6g quality fats.

fat free or low fat cottage cheese for extra protein

eggwhites

tuna fish if u can handle it i sure cant

Ive been drinkin 2-3 shakes (about 40g whey protein each) a day while dieting, and have gone from 185 to 170 in the last 2 months. Ive also been putting on muscle, so Ive actually lost more than 15lbs of fat. Ive also been doing 30 min cardio 3-4 times/wk.
