training with a torn ACL????

My friend came on here looking for a way to get bigger and stronger and leaner. Well I told him that you can't do it all at once and he agreed after hearing it from more than one person. Either way he asked me what's westside when everyone responded westside westside,etc.... so I told him that's the way I train so he said he'd like to start training with me and my g/f. So i told him I'm not sure if he can do that b/c he has a torn ACL that just happened I'd say 4 months ago. Now hes been doing Physical therapy and then he's gonna have a surgery.

My question can he stil train for SQ and DL or should he just wait til he gets surgery and just train Bench in the meanwhile????

one of my training partners has had BOTH of his ACLs torn and repaired. I want to point out that these were NOT powerlifting related injuries.

However, resumption of training depends on a few things:

1. what kind of shape was he in before training
2. what are his goals

I have NEVER heard of someone NOT having surgery for an ACL tear. MCL tears are often not repaired if the person is a non-athlete.

Make sure he does his research, knows exactly what is being done to him, and that he doctor knows he will be powerlifting. If the doctor says he can never do it, find another doctor. That is simply not true.

FYI: my friends surgery was 10 weeks ago. He is pulling 315 for some reps now. He is still working on range of motion for the squat.

Good luck.

Thanks for the replys guys.

Well he messed up his knee playing football. I mentioned him about the whole powerlifting thing but he doesn't want to compete or nething just get stronger. The reason he wanted to get stronger was for football. His goals were to play college ball and he did have 2 schools offer him scholarships but he's not sure if he can play and colleges REALLY look at if u play ur senior year or not and he doesn't think that he'll be playing this year this school starts up again soon and so does football season.

Hopefully his doctor won't be like "you can never play again or do any heavy lifting" b/c he likes it, i know his doc already told him that if he has surgery, then plays football and messes it up again he'll never be able to play and theres a chance he can't walk on that leg.

Hey Cubanito17, I do know someone with a torn ACL that still squats and lifts. He tore his ACL and never got it repaired, but they went in and "snipped" a few things off. He has problems with running side to side, because his knee is unstable. Since his ACL is non-existant, he has a very "loose" knee. Occassionally, when, and if, he runs side to side, his knee will swell up, and he'll need to ice it, and take it easy for a few days. But other than that, if he just squats, he's okay. He's never been a big squatter, but has squatted a legal 500 at 220lbs.bwt. with the ACL injury.
