too much protien?

it depends on what else you are eating. protein is 4cals per gram as are carbs. fats meanwhile are 9cals per gram. If you take in more calories than you burn during the day, you will gain weight...regardless of where the cals came from. Therefore the answer to your question is yes and no.
 
quigs is right on...it ultimately comes down to calories burned versus calories consumed. Higher glycemic carb intake can give you a higher propensity toward storing fat though.
