Do Regular High Protein Diets Have Potential Health Risks on Kidney Function in Athletes?

Jacques R. Poortmans; Olivier Dellalieux
Full Article Table of Contents for Vol. 10, Iss. 1

Abstract
Excess protein and amino acid intake have been recognized as hazardous potential implications for kidney function, leading to progressive impairment of this organ. It has been suggested in the literature, without clear evidence, that high protein intake by athletes has no harmful consequences on renal function. This study investigated body-builders (BB) and other well-trained athletes (OA) with high and medium protein intake, respectively, in order to shed light on this issue. The athletes underwent a 7-day nutrition record analysis as well as blood sample and urine collection to determine the potential renal consequences of a high protein intake. The data revealed that despite higher plasma concentration of uric acid and calcium, Group BB had renal clearances of creatinine, urea, and albumin that were within the normal range. The nitrogen balance for both groups became positive when daily protein intake exceeded 1.26 g q kg–1 but there were no correlations between protein intake and creatinine clearance, albumin excretion rate, and calcium excretion rate. To conclude, it appears that protein intake under 2.8 gq kg–1 does not impair renal function in well-trained athletes as indicated by the measures of renal function used in this study.

Do an internet search for "protein poisoning" there is such a thing. It's usually when you intake too much protein and not enough fats. Check though.

Boy, you guys really need to stop making these type posts. This is where so much mis information gets started. Have some research to back up what you say.

Sure enought, someone willl read that and go around telling their friends about protein poisoning. :(

I have been intakeing about 300-400 gram of protien. Now Im all clogged up and sick to my stomech. Can to much protien make u sick?

How much fibre (good fibrous carbs) are you taking in? At a minimum, the body needs 32g of fibre to 'keep it all going'. If your fibrous carbs aren't high enough, you're actually doing an Atkins-lookalike - and one of the known side effects of Atkins is clogged drains! Try logging what you eat into fitday.com for a couple of days to see what your fibre intake is. You might also want to switch up the protein sources and see if you react better to one than to the other.

Also, am I correct in assuming that you weigh 300-400lbs? The rule of thumb around here (not mainstream - well, mainstream BODYBUILDING ;) ) seems to be 1-1.2 g protein/lb of bodyweight.

Taking in 300 gr. of lean protein and doing an Atkins diet can and are two totally different things. You cannot compare those two on that basis.

The fiber does not make it Atkins or not.

Atkins allowed high fat proteins, bacon, etc. Along with high fats from butter, etc.
