The Pill

Hey Guys

Just wanted to know what your thoughts are on using the pill. Before I started using it my weight was a steady 118 lbs, I didnt eat too great, yet I exercised and didnt really gain weight too easily.... Then I started using the Pill, and Ive tracked it back to when I first started, my weight sky rocketed to 134 lbs and only after completing the Body for LIFE challenge did I manage to get it down to 120lbs (which was ok, concidering I had gained 6-8lbs of muscle :))

I just want to see if there is a link in using the pill, as before I started it I would lose weight quite rapidly and gain it very slowly, seems as though the process has reversed now?

Thanks for your help :)

Which "The Pill" are you using? Oral contraceptives regulate estrogen cycles which will sort of force a certain amount of estrogen-related bodyfat. Different pills have different doses of estrogen/progesterone and the higher dosage ones often cause bodyfat / weight gain. I personally have used a brand called Trilevelin or Triphasal (forget which is the generic brand) since 1985 (except for time off while competing). This is an extremely low dosage and I can't really say that its ever kept me from losing weight.

How well the pill dosages work is a very individual thing, but if you want the advantage of birth control, you can work with your OBGYN to find a pill that works for you. Other alternatives are an IUD.

Hey sassy

Im using triphasil, and there are a few friends of mine who are using it too and are having the same problem...wierd!

Did you try other brands / doses? I've been very lucky with it myself when others caused break through bleeding, cramps, etc. IF its not working for you, you need tell your doc & work to identify a different one.

Exactly. You do not have to "suffer" through the sides of a certain BCP - there are tons of them out there. Talk to your doc and see what the alternatives are for you.

Modern technology is great so definitely take advantage of it!!!! I don't think there's any one part of being female that I hate more than that time of the month. And if my hormones are imbalanced I'm a mega bitch on wheels and frankly I just feel like shit. Occassionally when I was 16 I'd get raging cramps that didn't really "cripple" me, but i was so uncomfortable I just wanted to jump off a bridge. Finally in college I made my first trip to the OBGYN and had great luck w/ triphasal. And I still use it. It may take a few months to get the right dosage but a good doc will work with you on identifying your options. If your doc DOESN"T do this or you really have to push him/her to get a different one, get a diff doc.
