The brand-new new music thread

From Zero said:
How you liking it bro?

I think it's a pretty decent album. Can't compare it to any previous efforts since I don't own any, but this was a solid pickup.

So you weren't impressed with Brand New Sin's latest?

Homes. Get The Cold White Light. Also a hell of an album from Sentenced.

As for BNS, no. I was very disappointed. The first OWNS it. I wound up trading it in last week.

I looked for Cold White Light last time I was at the CD store and they didn't have it.

I think I'll pass on BNS then, since I really didn't get into the first album that much, except for a few songs.

Yeah, how is that Avenged Sevenfold? I've heard only one song from it and for the most part I liked it. That's one I may have to hear the entire disc before buying. I wasn't overly impressed with their last one.

I think powerslave might like it. I doubt you will fz. They have gone NWOBHM-style, completely. Old fans are pissed. Long-time metal fans see the "Maidenization" of any good metal band as inevitable. Harmonized guitar leads, clear singing, thirteen minute tunes etc. Only problem is that this guy doesn't actually have halford's or axl's pipes. But he sure goes for it.

Yeah, the one I have heard has a definite NWOBHM feel to it. Twin leads, etc.

Hey now.

The couple of tunes I heard were pretty sweet. Next time I'm in the CD store I might pick it up.

Shadows definitely needs more range in his vox. I'm kinda disappointed he can't scream anymore, but I give him a lot of respect for taking a new direction, rather than calling it a day.

Cephalic Carnage - Animalies
Avenged Sevenfold - City of Evil

Listened to about half of the AS, not too bad.

Also awaiting delivery of:
Sentenced - The Funeral Album
As I Lay Dying - Shadows are Security
Lamb of God - Killadelphia (DVD)

Picked up today:

Iced Earth - Gettysburg 1863 (DVD)

Also ordered:

Nevermore - This Godless Endeavor
Arch Enemy - Doomsday Machine
Throwdown - Vendetta
Demons & Wizards - Touched by the Crimson King

Heard a new Throwdown track today called "Burn." Pretty much beats everything off Haymaker. They're a decent band, but I think they have a lot of potential to make much better music ...

Avenged Sevenfold - City of Evil
A Perfect Murder - Unbroken
Hammerfall - Crimson Thunder
In Flames - Jester Race/Black Ash Inheritance

Time for some reviews!

A7x: About halfway through. Still looking for the shout-outs to Dream Evil and Dragonforce in the liner notes. Good music, but it's obvious Shadows' clean vox took a beating along with the screamy screams after that surgery. Singing sounded about 7,000,000 times better on Waking the Fallen. Other than that little gripe, it's solid music.

Hammerfall: On my official Heavy Metal Cheese O'Meter, this mid-tempo power metal opus registers a respectable 6.7. Anthemic choruses that will have you shouting along and leads that will do their best to create an orgasm via the aural senses prove that these leather-clad Finnish folk, while laying down the cheesiest lyrics this side of Scandinavia, know how to make an enjoyable 45 minutes of music.

A Perfect Murder: While taking influence from Pantera and Metallica, they seem to have forgotten that the aforementioned performed for more than two minutes at a time. Good music though.

In Flames: N/A. Will listen tomorrow, probably.

Final review of A7x: Great musicianship; Absymal vocal performance. They need to fire Matt, or ne needs to take more than a few months' worth of voice lessons before putting out another record.

In Flames: Only got to listen to a couple tracks, but it sounds fucking killer. This is what they need to go back to with this next album.

Jester Race is an incredible album. IMO, Whoracle is In Flames' only other album that can come close to Jester Race.

Willie Nelson Countryman

I'm not kidding. I mean it. Willie's new one rocks. He just doesn't care to hide anymore, does he? Good for you, Willie. Fuck 'em.

Obituary - Frozen in Time
Byzantine - And They Shall Take up Serpents
Demons & Wizards - S/T
The Black Dahlia Murder - Miasma

Arch Enemy - Doomsday Machine

Nevermore - This Godless Endeavor

Byzantine is solid. There's some mighty fine riffs on it (Track 3, you know what I'm talking about). Both the Arch Enemy and the Nevermore are better than their last albums.

I couldn't get into the new Obtituary. I love that band but it seemed really forced on this one. There's a couple of good slam parts but it isn't nearly as good as their older shit.

Demons & Wizards is shhhhhaaaaaweeet! And the BDM is pretty solid.

The Showdown - A Chorus of Obliteration

Goddammit. I HATE when I sample a disc in the store, really like the sound, then play the whole thing, and find out I fucking hate it.

Guess this one's heading out to be traded in soon.

Manntis - Sleep in Your Grave
Chimaira - S/T
Soilent Green - Confrontation

A Perfect Murder - Strength Through Vengeance
Mercenary - 11 Dreams

Alright, let's see how the latest purchases are:

Mercenary
Terrific band. Not sure how this gem found its way past me for good year or so. Melodic metal in the same vein as Evergrey or Nevermore. You might even achieve the sound of Mercenary by combining the aforementioned, and adding a dash of Stratovarius in the vox department. Not a bad track on the album, although the cover of Music Non Stop is fairly cheesy, and the 3D Remix of 11 Dreams isn't necessary. But hey, I ain't complaining. Solid release from these Danes. I hope this upcoming tour with Nevermore gives them a push for a US tour soon.

Blackfield
Side-project from prog-pop-rock mastermind Steven Wilson. Actually more of a duet with Israeli Aviv Geffen (I'm not familiar with him, but he's evidently fairly successful in his homeland). Not nearly as epic as I'd hoped (I cannot get enough Porcupine Tree. The same should go for you), but the songs are solid, melodic, and, dare I say, a tad heavy at times. Wilson's vocals are haunting as always. Let's hope we hear more from this project again. This is in my Top 10 of the year for sure.

Gizmachi
Impressed at Ozzfest, I thought Gizmachi actually had something interesting to offer to the metal community. Upon spinning The Imbuing, it seems I may have been wrong. Everything that sounded good from the band seems to only be highlighted while on stage. Clean vox, though adding some flavor, are kinda weak, and can't really help to add enough variety in the 5 minute-average-tracks. Sorry to say, the disc becomes boring, and it does it quickly. No wonder I found it used for $3.99.

Nevermore
Perhaps another to break into the Top 10 this year. Born is perhaps the best Nevermore track I've heard since The Seven Tongues of God. The chorus may as well be ebola, it's so fucking infectious. Superb musicianship throughout the record, and guitar solos galore make me believe metal is not only alive in the US, but on top of the crazy game we call music. I tip my hat to these fine Seattle gents.

Swallow the Sun
2005 is offering some real gold, and I seem to be picking it all up. What a terrific album from this unknown doomy sextet. Nine epic tracks of dark, gloom, and despair (with the last one being a cover of Candlemass. Nice to see they haven't forgotten the roots of the genre.). Aaron Lewis, for Christ's sake, take some notes.

Opeth - Ghost Reveries
Watch Them Die - Bastard Son
Bleed the Sky - Paradigm in Entropy

Philly date finally announced for the tour.

I am so fucking there.

This album destroys ass too.

I totally forgot in was already out. Just picked it up today.

Jester Race and Demons & Wizards' S/T are both seminal masterpieces. In Flames has never been able to touch their work on Jester Race.

Demons & Wizards should have their second album out already, but I havn't had the chance to run to Madison or Indy to pick it up.

Are any of the guys from Sentenced going to do anything now?

:cow:

Last weeks purchases:

God Forbid - IV: Constitution of Treason
Anthrax - Alive 2 (2005)
Flotsam and Jetsam - Dreams of Death
Nuclear Assault - Third World Genocide

DVDs
Anthrax - Alive 2 (2005)
SOD - 20 Years of Dysfunction

double the anthrax alive

Animal collective sung tongs is quite different. "Drop acid much, boys?" says Wend. :)

Picked up everything by jazzman Pat Martino. Especially East! and Live at Yoshi's. That man, after brain surgery, learned to play a second time. And the both times he learned to play twice better than I'll ever learn to play once! Amazing.

Anyway, I know it's not metal, but it's really good stuff for an off day.

The long-awaited follow-up to Demons and Wizard's S/T is a disappointment to say the least. They might as well done a split with Hammerfall.

The new Demons and Wizards is just...so...so below any of the member's usual quality.

It just made me want a new Blind Guardian album even more.

Exodus - Shovel Headed Kill Machine
Hypocrisy - Virus

powerslave, how's that Priest DVD? I saw it this weekend and almost grabbed it.

It's good. It was filmed in Japan. No extras just the concert. Set list is probably the same as what you saw them play live. I had tickets to see them but ended up not going.

Next week Maiden's Death on the Road DVD comes out.

Heh, the concert was the same weekend as our move into the new house. We were still hauling stuff Sunday evening and my girlfriend had to have all her stuff out of her old house on Sunday. Plus, I was cooked from all the moving.

Hell Within - Asylum Of The Human Predator
Pelican - The Fire In Our Throats Will Beckon The Thaw

Hell Within:
Thrashy riffs. Leads could be longer. Pretty harsh vox — almost Carcass-like. Clean vocals are hit or miss: At times, very pleasant. At other times, it's like "wtf, when did I put this Atreyu CD in?" Overall, not bad, but the band can improve.

Pelican:
An impressive instrumental, voiceless journey. Thunderous, epic, and ambient. Very interesting, and never boring. Can't really think of how else to describe it. Imagine ISIS, sans vocals.

Testament - Live in London
Old Man's Child - Vermin
Paths of Possesion - Promises in Blood
Destruction - Inventor of Evil

DVDs

Testament - Live in London
Cradle of Filth - Peace Through Superior Firepower.

DevilDriver - The Fury of Our Maker's Hand
Full Blown Chaos - Wake the Demons
Darkane - Wake the Demons
Vader - The Art of War

Your thoughts and opinions on the new CD from Poland's finest?

Quite surprising. I really like it. Look through this thread and you won't see many death metal records in my possession. This one, however, is really fucking groovy.

And now, what I think of my other purchases:

DevilDriver: Well that was a waste of money. Note to self: If a band sounds really cool live, sample the disc first, rather than forking out the money and be disappointed. The lead track, End of the Line, is fucking killer, but the rest of the CD really let me down. Maybe I just can't get past Dez's shitty vocals. Should have learned my lesson with Coal Chamber.

Darkane: A few too many blast beats for my taste, as I'm not a huge fan of the sound, but Jesus does everything else make up for it. I haven't heard this many catchy choruses in a melo-death record since Soilwork's Natty Born Chaos. The title track might be my new favorite song for a while.

Full Blown Chaos: Well, they ain't gonna win any awards for Best Musicianship anytime soon, but boy are these guys just so much fun to listen to. Each time I play a song from FBC, I just want to flip over a table and punch someone in the face. Think Hatebreed, but twice as fast, five times as heavy, and like a billion times better overall. Jamey, bro, take notes. Hell, you even helped produce the album. Learn some stuff.

I finally got some new CD's.

As I Lay Dying - Shadows Are Security
Nightrage - Descent Into Chaos
Children of Bodom - Follow the Reaper
Haste the Day - When Everything Falls
Sevendust - Next
Unearth - Stings of Conscience
Sentenced - The Cold White Light
Roadrunner United: The All Star Sessions
Mercenary - 11 Dreams
Still Remains - Of Love and Lunacy

I just got Viking Skull - Born in Hell

Sleazy doom rock with members from Raging Speedhorn (awsome British metal band). It just oozes dirt, most enjoyable. Favourite track is Beers,Drugs and Bitches

Lamb of God - Killadelphia (CD)

Have a mother load of discs arriving tomorrow: Sworn Enemy, Nocturnal Rites, Annihilator, a couple of Seven Witches discs.

I want that Killadelphia CD.
I was at that show. :)

I gotta put the music buying on hold. I've spent about $1500 recently on shit. So, yeah, no unnecessary purchases for this guy for the time being.

I know what you mean. The mortgage has slowed me down some.

Sworn Enemy - The Beginning of the End
Nocturnal Rites - Grand Illusion
Annihilator - Schizo Deluxe
Hellfueled - Volume One
Seven Witches - City of Lost Souls
Seven Witches - Year of the Witch
Seven Witches - Amped

Quick reviews:

Painkiller - Jesus. Best Priest I've heard. If you like metal, and don't like Judas Priest, shoot yourself in the head.

Pitch Black Effects - Meh. Kinda mediocre. The other release I have from them, Flesh Power Dominion, is so much more melodeath than this. A few really catchy songs though.

Mandylion - Fantastic! WTF did I wait this long to add The Gathering to my collection for? My only gripe? The sticker on the jewelcase that reads: For fans of Lacuna Coil, Evanescence, and Garbage. Okay, I can see LC, but pop-rock bullcrap like the latter two? Come on Century Media. Don't get greedy now.

Demonic - Worst Testament album I've heard. Still better than a lot of other metal though. But, yeah, for Testament? Crap.

Their attempt at Death Metal. Not good. Stick to what you do best....Thrash.

I've never been a Priest fan....(reaches for the .45)....BUT.... I've never taken much time to give their music a real chance. I guess I just haven't gotten around to listening to that much of it. So I can't really say whether I like or dislike them.

I haven't been able to find Pitch Black Effects anywhere yet. I'll probably just order online. Shame to hear it's not that great. Flesh_Power_Dominion and My Passion_Your Pain are both damn good albums. Both are prime examples of what melo-death should sound like. The only song I've heard off the new album is Sweet Cyanide, which I think is a solid track.

New Kalmah is cool. The vocals are deeper. Some of the arrangements are kind of middle of the road. Sounds like Amon Amarth at points instead of Bodom.

I didn't even know Kalmah released a new album. I'll definitely have to pick that up.

Everyone needs to check out Echosilence. Amazing. Jazzy metal like Cynic/Aghora.

Also, the new Darkthrone is pretty good. Really thrashy midpaced blackened rock. Great guitar tone. Good songs if you want to get trashed on whiskey by yourself.
